Description
When the Asteroid Axis War started the Republic
called upon its Valhallan allies to provide ships.
There was a political firestorm in the congress as
anti-monarchy forces tried to have the constitution
re-written in an effort to undermine the king's
authority. Because of this effort, the Royal Valhallan
Space Navy (RVSN) was delayed three months. Had they
been present, it well might have been argued that the
Axis would've failed in their assault against the
Hamthen home system.Humanoid in form, the typical adult Valhallan stand 1.8 meters tall and has dark red skin. Each hand has two thick fingers and a thumb. The feet end in two large, muscular toes that allow a Valhallan to be particularly adept at climbing. The head is human-like and has hair, but the earlobes are small and more circular. Unlike the majority of races, Valhallan typically wear clothing for most occasions. The Valhallan have been in space for fifty years before experiencing a civil war between the monarchy and a group of ambitious aristocrats and petty nobility. What ended the war was the formation of constitutional monarchy and the revoking of all lesser hereditary titles. The position of monarch is hereditary, but actual power is through a congress of representatives and a prime minister. What powers the monarch did have included the power to initiate, control, approve or disapprove any matter involving foreign affairs and acting as the commander-in-chief of the military. Since the Valhallan were ignorant of warp points and the military was greatly reduced in size the original foes of the monarchy saw these as inconsequential concessions. Fourteen years of peace was broken when a Terpla'n survey squadron entered the home system. What was even more dramatic was that the monarch, King Russen, exercised his foreign affairs powers and initiated first contact personally. It was a stunning move that drew great support from the people and the resentment of his old foes. A trade treaty was quickly followed by military alliance, giving the king a mandate to enlarge the space navy so that it could fulfill its treaty obligations. This action made the King Russen look bad in the eyes of the Terpla'ns and their other allies. In an effort to prove his nation's commitment, Russen personally lead his forces into combat. During the hardest fighting in the campaign, with practically all of the Valhallan fleet at the front, Russen died as his flagship inflicted death-dealing blows on his Axis counterpart. When word got back home the anti-monarchy forces, working from a contingency plan, staged a coup. They attempted to take over the government and imprison the royal family, but failed. Only the truly radical and petty nobility die-hards committed themselves to the coup, while the overwhelming majority of the population pledged their support to the monarchy (not necessarily the government, which held the majority of the coup plotters). Two weeks of fighting saw the last of the anti-monarchy positions overrun by loyalist forces and the installation of Princess Quasso as queen. Fulfilling her father's pledge, Quasso personally participated in the last assault against the Asteroid Axis, ensuring the final victory for the allies. At the end of the Axis War the Valhallan became partners and then amalgamated with the CPS. The RVSN utilized CPS designs and kept only a limited number of their own in service. Valhallan strikefighter pilots are adept in spatial awareness and reflexes, giving them a +1 to initiative in fighter vs. fighter/small craft combat. |
