For the rest of the Fendalen
War it was relatively quite for the Uhlani. The
military-based society went about its daily pursuits after
its surrender to the Gysts in the early part of the Fendalen
War. Practically no dissent was expressed, and the number of
Gyst stationed on the homeworld hovered around 5,000. Still
there was some unspoken resentment, especially since the
ships and amount of force used by the Gyst was 'sub par'
compared to the fleets used to attack the CPS. Surely the
great Uhlani were worthy of losing to a stronger fleet.
Cultural liaisons and PR teams from the Gyst wove their
collective magic, telling the public that they were valued
partners of the Kingdom, the greatest star nation in known
space. With help from the Gyst science outpost the technical
level of the Uhlani economy and infrastructure advanced at a
brisk pace. In the tenth anniversary marking the defeat and
subsequent inclusion of the Uhlani into the Gyst Kingdom's
influence a formal offer of amalgamation was made by King
Kysjyt. Included in the amalgamation treaty was the creation of the 10th Knights Brigade. This fleet was to be built, operated, and commanded by Uhlani personnel. Up to this time the race was allowed only two task groups and then just for self-defense. Funding from the Kingdom's budget was diverted so that the Uhlani could construct the 10th KB at their homeworld shipyard. A deep feeling of appreciation was felt by the entire race now that they had a fleet to which to devote their collective effort. In a ceremony at Uhlan's Officer Academy King Kysjyt knighted twenty admirals and generals and conducted the first traditional dinner toast to the Kingdom in the main dining hall. Kysjyt had barely returned home when word came about the appearance of a Pulurtan RD2s and a destroyer from the Sauna/Wilderness warp point. Less than a month later the Pulurtans, having made their opinions and intentions clear, declared war on the Kingdom. With alacrity the Uhlani began a massive training and construction program. It would be some time before the first task force of the 10th KB would be ready, leaving the construction of prefabricated base components, missile pods, minefield patterns and laser buoys as the most immediate form of aid the race could provide. The hierarchy structure of the society allowed for the selective recruitment of the best qualified Uhlani for active military service. Industrial and asteroid colonization recruitment drives were also implemented. As with all other races the Uhlani felt revulsion upon hearing the genocide performed by the 4th High Navy fleet on the Vendian homeworld. Crown governor (formally titled commanding general) Watjal released both self-defense task groups for immediate service at the front. This action left the Uhlan system without a mobile defense force for the next three years. Watjal and everyone else knew this and felt it was worth the risk. What was needed were ships to halt the HN from going down the warp chain that eventually lead to Uhlan itself. If a closed warp point appeared in the home system, disgorging a rampaging Pulurtan fleet, then that was just fate. Taking the fight to the enemy was a driving principle of Uhlan society and couldn't be ignored. HN Task Force 43, heading 'east' along the warp chain that connected the Vendian and Uhlani sectors, was stopped cold by KB Task Force 61 and Uhlani ships in the Majuro system. A previously unsettled system, Majuro was selected to become the forward base for the 6th KB in operations to regain the Vendian sector. The second planet of Majuro, Uliga, was a harsh environment world noted for its extreme weather due to its 45 degree axial tilt. A settlement was crash-emplaced on Uliga. This population base enabled the construction of a space station and OWPs, eventually freeing the mobile yards back to the 6th KB. In addition to Uliga, the first and third planets, Dalap and Darrit, as well Uliga's moon had colonies crashed emplaced, all by Uhlani. The rich mineral content of all three planets paid for the maintenance of all of Majuro's fixed defenses. Along with industrial expansion and an ongoing asteroid exploitation program Majuro could conduct rotational ship refits with minimal support from the Kingdom. Finally in the war's third year the first task force of the 10th KB, after completing its shakedown cruise in the home system, reached Majuro. Over the next five years, as more and more task forces and replacements were sent forward, the 6th and 10th KBs engaged in assaults and feints staged from the two Majuro warp points threatened by the enemy. The 4th HN Fleet had gone on the defensive in most of the Vendian sector, launching spoiling attacks and the rare assault at Majuro and other neighboring Kingdom sectors. Actual advances were made further 'south' in the sector from the system of Gateway. The neighboring system of Assembly of the Commonwealth Kiosho sector and those within two warp links of it saw mobile battles between HN and CSF task forces. Invasion of the Jazta Union sector of Memorial was staged from Gateway as well. In the eighth year at all points of contact the allies launched coordinated offensives, back by reserve forces and carefully husband supplies. The 10th KB moved 'north' from Majuro, reaching the Hillock system and linking up with a task force of the 9th KB. Moving south down the chain, the Uhlani manned fleet assaulted and captured the Everest system, the entry point for the 4th HN Fleet into Kingdom space. In the intervening systems the Armored Knights Corps (Gyst Kingdom Army) landed and engaged High Army garrisons left behind on Gyst worlds. A large number of Uhlani troopers earned the Silver Sword of Valor (SSV) in these reclamation battles. One of them, Battery Sargent Cern Lasu, went on to become one of the most decorated members of the AKC. Not only did he obtained the SSV with diamonds, Lasu also got the Defender of the Realm medal and was made a Knight of the Realm by King Kysjyt himself after the battle of Pinnacle. After the battles in the Bios and Homeworld sectors of the High Kingdom peace finally arrived. The Uhlani had prove themselves proficient warriors both in space and on the ground. In the post-war period multiple terraforming projects were started within the New Kingdom. Given two of these worlds to engineer and colonize, the Uhlani found employment for their now underemployed active military personnel. Democratic reforms, started by King Kysjyt, slowly crept into Uhlani society. In what came to be known as the Era of the Long Peace the race still had a hierarchal society with the military at the core. The society had evolved, however, to acknowledge additional and influential hierarchies such as academia, theater, athletic, and service industries to name just a few. The Uhlani were fine citizens of the New Kingdom, which was what King Pyanyt needed when the Era came to an end decades later. The 10th Knights Brigade Born on paper, the 10th KB slowly accumulated ships, starting with carriers and their escorts. The first ships actually made part of the 10th where the two home system defense task groups sent to Majuro to bolster the 6th. Ultimately the 10th was comprised of four task forces. Each of the first three task forces were composed of three task groups - one of warships ranging from dreadnoughts up to supermonitors (and ultimately including leviathans and juggernauts), one of carriers and their related escorts, and third was made of lighter warships ranging from advanced battleships down to frigates. The fourth task force had four task groups: the combined freighter/mobile yard/repair ship contingent, the AKC landing force, and two escort groups. Under the command of Vice Admiral* Kukrek the 10th KB held its own against HN Task Force 44 at Majuro's second 'northern' warp point. Prior to Operation Hurricane Fury (the massive multi-prong allied campaign at the start of the war's eight year) one of Kukrek's most notable successes was a gunboat raid in year six. With no RD2 probe beforehand to tip off the defenders, the Uhlani gunboat force of 600 emerged on the far side of the Marshall/Majuro warp point, find no less than three freighters in the HN minefields, deploying mine patterns and laser buoys. The raid lasted only two minutes, costing Kukrek 143 gunboats. For TF 44 it lost all three freighters: a Logistics FT13, a Dragon Cane FT10(ML), and a Squire BBA, all loaded to the gills with anti-matter mines and laser buoys. It was a clear victory for Kukrek in the economic sense with TF 44 losing over 2.5 times the value of materials compared to the cost of 143 gunboats and their crews. Just two months later Kukrek got a defensive victory when the second and only serious attempt by TF 44 to enter Majuro from the 'north' was repulsed with considerable casualties. At the start of Hurricane Fury the 10th's four task forces were finally up to strength. Decisively defeating the HN defenses in Marshall, the 10th moved further up warp chain. The fleet reached Hillock, meeting TF 91 above the planet Alpine Meadow. On this planet the AKC 9th Army, entirely composed of Uhlani, was landed to take on the HA garrison. The pattern continued all along the chain down to Everest, with the 9th,10th and 14th Armies leapfrogging one another. Campaigns on planets such as Alpine Meadow, Lakefront and Orchard never lasted longer than four months. Facing HA garrisons that were for all intensive purposes abandoned to their fate, the AKC armies resolved to eliminate them as fast as possible. Atrocities committed by unhinged HA regiments, ranging from suicide nuclear attacks and gassing of civilians, lead to increasing use of KBS systems, even against squad-sized opponents. Intensity of fighting was such that AKC Uhlani armies typically took few prisoners: the average size of captured and surrendered HA garrisons on worlds fighting Uhlani troops was 20% of its pre-assault strength. From Everest the 6th and 10th KBs moved into the Bios sector. From here Gyst troops were used to invade Pulurtan planets, leaving Uhlani troops to secure the asteroid colonies. Kukrek lead the 10th further into the Bios sector, smashing fixed defenses and orbital works along the way as he made for the Cornerstone system, gateway to the Blue River sector. The fleet didn't arrive in time for the decisive allied break-in, but participated in the hunt for the remaining HN task forces in the system. With the help of the tachyon scanners of an attached CSF cruiser squadron, Kukrek found the sizable remnants of the 1st Composite Fleet. With deft maneuvering and cunning the Uhlani admiral had TF 101 in the path of the creeping Pulurtan fleet. Only just before entering HBM range did Kukrek had his ships raise their drive fields and move in at full speed. Surprize was total; not one HN ship escaped. With its toehold in Cornerstone gone the HN attempt to reinforce the system failed as the relief task force from Blue River was decimated as it headed to the pre-arranged rendezvous point in the system. When the war ended almost three-fourths of the Blue River sector was occupied by the allies. For his efforts Kukrek was prompted to the rank of admiral** and made a Knight of the Realm. The 10th KB went on to patrol Pulurtan systems it conquered during the war for three years before being reduced to one active task force. One of the five ships the fleet managed to capture in the war, the Obsidian class juggernaut Baron Varoni, was made into a war museum and naval school and placed in geosynchronous orbit over Uhlani Prime. In its composition the 10th KB used RN designs for the most part. The few 'home grown' designs employed by the fleet reflected Uhlani requirements as they saw for battle and fleet support units. The Corps Commander class monitor was an upscaled and updated version of the Artillery class dreadnought. Field Element superdreadnoughts acted as oversized escorts, protecting the larger ships with volleys of anti-fighter and SM2-Lt4 missiles. The primaries and spinal force beams were concentrated on targets that were the focus of the Corps Commanders. The later Shotgun class added more anti-gunboat firepower in the way of Pg4s, though it came at the expense of some capital primary beam installations. Later came the fire support ships, the Regiment and Battery Park classes. The missile and capital primary beams on these ships were used against whatever targets threatened the larger ships while the spinal force beams battered specific targets in the enemy fleet. Built especially for the assault on Pinnacle, the Platoon class frigates emphasized firepower over speed. They, too, would be used as close-in escorts in the final stages of the war when cloaking was no longer an issue. The AKC armies composed entirely of Uhlani troops (the 9th, 10th, and 14th) tried to achieve as much commonality with their Gyst counterparts as possible. While ground armor, aquatic craft, and aerospace fighters had to be tailored to Uhlani physiology the components were made to universal standards. This allowed for more efficient production of parts and storage of replacements. In close quarters combat, such as urban environments, asteroid complexes and boarding actions, the Uhlani made use of two weapons. One was a one-meter long thrusting spear tipped with a 30 centimeter durasteel blade. The edges of the blade were lined with synthetic diamond. In combat it was found that Pulurtan body armor was quite laser and bullet resistant, but was vulnerable to cutting. Often it would take just one good thrust to pierce the armor and the flesh underneath. The hand held gauss pistol (given its size one can easily mistake it for a cut-down slug throwing rifle) was the second weapon used in close quarters. Able to fire two kinds of ammunition, the gauss pistol had a greater degree of control over that of the standard laser and blasters in the inventory. In boarding actions and fighting in asteroid habitats the pistol could fire 3mm glass beads coated in synthetic diamond. This was useful in that the rounds could deliver damage via kinetic impact, causing internal bleeding and debilitating bruising without worrying the rounds could puncture walls and airlocks. For more heavily armored opponents, the beads are replaced by 3mm durasteel darts. Also coated with synthetic diamond, these darts could cut through the laser resistant armor favored by the Pulurtans. Late in the war, when capturing and garrisoning asteroid colonies and outposts became the Uhlani AKC main mission, a new type of troop transport was built. The Assault class carried a considerable contingent of assault shuttles and marine boarding parties. In one of the war's most memorable actions the Assault class ship Colonel Bakker was instrumental in the capture of the HN juggernaut Baron Varoni. * = Admiral Third Barb in the RN rank structure. ** = Admiral Second Barb in the RN rank structure. |
