Description The Uan race is of insectoid origin. 1.6 meters long by .5 meter high, the body is composed of four segments. A pair of limbs is associated with each of the four segments. The front segment houses the three pairs of eyes, the mouth, and two feathery antennae. The front pair of limbs end in rather strong but dexterous claws. Matriarchal in nature, the Uan have extended the family structure to that of planetary government. Females run the government and the civil service that oversees all the needs of the population. Males, forming 75% of the population, dominate the labor and military, though about half of all officers are female. Exploration was not a priority for the Uan. Only four systems were surveyed and two colonized in a period of twenty years. The Cooperative had started its fifth survey when it encountered a CPS forward security squadron. First contact was peaceful, unlike what happened with the Humarsh. A trade and military assistance treaty was quickly signed. The CPS was allowed to 'pass-through' and continue exploring on the other side of Uan territory, provided that a Uan survey force was involved. Under this arrangement, the CPS and Cooperative made contact with the Hamthens. But more importantly, it got the Cooperative involved in the war against the Asteroid Axis. With the Hamthen and CPS fleets battered the road was open for the Axis to drive deeper into CPS territory. In truth, it was actually Uan territory. The warp point defenses of two uninhabited systems, though strengthen with mines and a few bases, were overrun. In what came to be called The Battle at WP 1 the Axis successfully assaulted the Uan defenses at the home system's first warp point. In its entirety, the Uan Fleet was destroyed with the rest picked off by a prolong missile engagement. Every colony in the system and the homeworld was destroyed. It was only through the sacrifice of the CPS Quagaar allies that stopped the Axis from progressing further. With only two systems left and a population of 12.1 million the Uan were in dire straits. Mobilizing all the freighters and transports it could, the CPS evacuated 10 million Uan from Backyard to a habitable world within CPS territory. The remaining two million stayed behind to serve as the labor force for the CSF's new logistics base. It was only after the Axis War that the Uan returned to their homeworld to begin the decades-long work of reclamation. The Uan Space Fleet (USF) A defensive force, the USF made up for the size of its ships and bases with numbers. When thrown back on its own defenses the lack of fighters proved decisive. Bled as they were, the Axis fleet took out the homeworld orbitals and bombarded the planet into radioactive ruin. Had it not been for the Quagaar expeditionary fleet the Axis would've carried through and taken out the remaining populated Uan systems. After the Axis War the USF had only one CL tug, eight ES tugs, and three mobile shipyards left to it. The new home system defenses centered on type 5 bases at the two warp points and the home planet. The only fighters to see USF service were those on bases in the home system. Later, when gunboats were developed, the USF used those on the few ships that supported the various CPS fleet trains. In the closing stages of the Axis war the Uan Cooperative became treaty partners with the CPS. At some expense a Uan research outpost was established on the Terpla'n world of Yoshibo, enabling the battered insectoid ally to advance its technological base. During the Fendalen War the USF had its eight ES-sized tugs operate with the various allied OWP construction squadrons, towing finished OWPs to their assigned stations around warp points. Two years after the Fendalen War the Uan amalgamated with the CPS. With the depth of systems between the homeworld and nearest contact with the Kingdom the Uan had 90% of its defenses mothballed. The savings went to further restore the homeworld and fund industrial expansion on the three remaining Uan worlds. With the entry of the Commonwealth into the Pulurtan War all resources were called upon. For the Uan they built and manned half of all new construction Ua class tugs and all of the Brawn class tugs. The gunboats on those Ua tugs were operated by Uan flight crews. Beyond attacks on fleet trains by High Navy raiders the only combat Uan crews saw happened near the end of the war. One carrier squadron from the home defense force was demothballed, modernized, and sent to the front lines. The fifteen fighter and seven gunboat squadrons claimed three battleships and 62 fighters in the Battle of Westgate for the loss of CVL Carapace, 22 fighters and five gunboats. After the war the race continued to devote its energy in restoring the homeworld but sent several reclamation battalions to assist the Fendalens in reclaiming bombarded Pulurtan worlds. |
