Description The Tzel (pronounced zel) are perhaps the least aggressive of all known races. Standing at an average height of 1.8 meters on toeless feet, the typical Tzelan has a fine coat of wool covering the torso and limbs. Each hand has four fingers and a thumb. The head bears a resemblance to the terrestrial llama except that the teeth are smaller and better suited to eating meat. Tzelans typically wear light fabric tunics with many pockets to hold personal items. Religion on Tzel is centered on the worship of the Universal Soul. By daily meditation, often in a state of a deep trance, one can seek out and commune with the Universal Soul for enlightenment. This also had a hand in government. Since everyone had a desire to make their enlighten ideas practical, great debates were held to persuade others to make those ideas a reality. Over the centuries government and society on Tzel switched backed and forth as various new ideas were tried out. The one constant has been the Overseer, a holy person with the authority to declare if particular processes or sociality trends had produced more harm than good. After 150 years in space the Tzel got their first contact with extraterrestrial life in the form of the Humarsh. The government on Tzel at the time was based on pure market-driven forces. So it was natural that a trade treaty with the Humarsh was agreed upon. However, the Caucus, the civil service organization that oversaw the long-term needs of the race in general, decided not to have a military alliance with their new neighbors. There were only three frigates and two corvettes in the Tzel Navy, and those only existed due to a previous government that had a more of a military mindset. First contact, and the discovery of warp points, lead to a push for more military spending. A dozen type-4 bases were built to guard the first contact warp point. Six survey frigates were built, and shortly thereafter another warp point was found. Two systems were surveyed, but the second had no additional warp points, forming a cul-de-sac. Hostile environment outposts were established in those systems, solidifying the Tzel's claim. By the time the twelve OWPs were in position the Humarsh had returned, again asking for a military alliance. When told the circumstances the Caucus refused, but were intrigued about the Terpla'n Republic. Unable to enter the Humarsh home system with anything but unarmed freighters, and even then on a strict route directly to the home world, the Tzel nevertheless decided to do a clandestine survey. New freighters were built, identical in all regards to the previous version except that some holds were removed and in their place long-range scanners and science instruments were installed. The maintenance costs of these modified freighters were twice that of the originals, but the Tzel felt that was a reasonable price to pay. Since all cargo transfers were conducted with shuttles instead of docking (meant to make the Humarsh customs inspectors job easier by limiting and controlling the amount of contact) the modified freighters went undiscovered. After almost two years of gathering clandestine survey data the Tzel learned the existence of the Humarsh home system's other warp point. During that time the Tzel had advanced technically and developed the pinnace. In an audacious plan a freighter within the monthly convoy to Humarsh carried a pinnace loaded with a first-contact team. Laden with supplies, the pinnace was launched from the point of closest approach from the other warp point. After a day's travel the small craft came within detection range of the Humarsh OWPs. Since it was on the same general course used by the their own small craft the OWP crews ignored it until it came within identification range. It was here that the Tzel used a bit of subterfuge, stating that the pinnace carried some diplomats on a site tour. Not wanting to cause a scene by denying the diplomats the courtesy of landing, the warp point OWP commander gave his permission. Thanks to the range of the OWP weapons, the OWPs themselves had to be close to the warp point itself. Just shy of docking, the pinnace went to full speed and entered the warp point. In short the Tzel made first contact with the Terpla'n Republic. Now finding itself in an undesirable position, with both warp points sealed by potentially hostile forces, the Humarsh came back to the negotiation table with the Republic and entered into a trade and military pact. Relations with the Tzel didn't suffer despite the subterfuge. Indeed, most Humarshans appreciated the stunt for breaking two years of unnecessary hostility between themselves and the Republic. Both Humarsh and Tzel were able to expanded beyond their boarders and emplace colonies in distant systems. The Tzel continued with their market-driven government for another two years before electing on a socialist democracy. Industrial expansion was given top priority. When the Axis War started the CPS was reluctant to call upon the Tzel since they had no warship larger than a frigate. However, thanks to six years worth of industrial expansion the Tzel were able to build large numbers of frigates and corvettes for secondary combat forces and convoy escort. They also contributed significantly to the CPS carrier fleet with the Ateva class carrier. After the war the Tzel built copies of CPS cruisers and carriers to serve as the home system's mobile defense force. In the Fendalen War the Tzel decided to focus on convoy escort as its primary mission for the CPS. The fleet trains and logistic support squadrons were covered by Tzel-crewed carriers, cruisers and frigates. In perhaps the most unusual battle of the war was when two fleet trains, one CPS and the other Fendalen, practically ran into each other thanks to their active cloaking systems. The Tzelan commander, Commodore Geges, captured two large Fendalen freighters and destroyed the remainder, including the escorts. For the Fendalens the loss of the fleet train ended their offensive against the Endril home system, swinging the balance in favor of the CPS. The four year period between wars saw the Tzel take an active hand in updating and designing new ships in conjunction with the CPS BuShips. In particular, the new classes of box launcher armed ships were Tzelan in origin and were built in numbers to serve as dual-purpose warships and escorts. When it came to the Pulurtan War, in addition to fleet train and convoy support, the Tzel built and manned carriers of the Sertucon and Rehyat classes and served in the various CPS fleets. Partnered with the CPS at the start of the Fendalen War, the Tzelans never amalgamated with their ally. They felt the need to continue their great societal experiment and try new governmental forms every now and then. Already impressed with their dedication and cooperation the CPS didn't press the issue with the Tzel, a race that earned the right to be called 'Good Neighbors'. With their penchant to debate and construct any argument, pro or con, the Tzel were seen as a balancing force for the CPS, keeping their expectations and execution of power honest. |

An unusual class built for a specific task. Pulurtan convoy raiders still found ways to get at merchant ships in supposedly secure systems. The best way to find their bases was by conducting boarding actions and capturing Footman CLs. To that end the Tzelans built several Raider CTs and seeded them in every convoy possible. In one instance the plan worked, resulting in the discovery of a previously unknown closed warp point that the Pulurtans had been using. |

All other CPS races used copies of Terpla'n carriers and fighters. Atevas began carrying three dedicated recon fighters starting with the F2 (w/external fXR pack) once fXR technology was deployed. On the F3 and F4 the fXR was carried internally in lieu of weapons. For the F5 and JSF one fG and fXR were carried internally. With the advent of cloaking technology Atevas were used to escort ships that couldn't cloak or when cloaking wasn't an issue. |
