Description The Cazov arose from a heavy gravity world, much like the Hazen and Ahlon. Unlike the latter two races, the Cazov were on the small side, averaging only 1.4 meters tall. Standing on three legs, thick with muscle, was a torso that sprouted three equally muscular arms and thick, three digit hands. As for the head, it held a quartet of eyes along with a single mouth and four ears. In normal lighting a Cazovian skin color ranged from deep red to pink, all depending on what cultural group that particular individual originated. Particularly strong, Cazovian ground troops were noted for their proficiency in close-quarter combat, even in hostile planetary environments (which is where they did most of their fighting). When out of ammunition, it was observed that such troops resorted to using the standard issue monowire-edged hatchets (cleavers in Cazov usage) and whatever else was handy on the battlefield, even rocks. What struck the races that had contact with the Cazov as peculiar was the race's mental soundness, or lack of the same. Fendalen ambassador K.R. (Knight of the Realm) Lassig noted in his study of Cazov culture that seemingly random (but mostly minor) acts of every kind was the norm for this race and, despite the consequences of such acts, the society was inherently stable. One instance, during the signing of the military alliance treaty between the Fendalens and Cazovians, Lassig was given a crayon by the Dictate himself instead of a pen to sign the document. In another incident, Lassig had to play a children's game of hopscotch before he could enter an opera house. This was done in all seriousness. The problem was that the Cazov didn't know, or wanted to know, that their behavior would be interpreted differently by other races. It was a problem that would cost the race dearly in the years to come. Developing more or less normally, the Cazov had five major nations on their homeworld by the time the reactionless drive was invented. After decades of hectic political fighting the Cazov held a world-wide convention to decide how to achieve a world state. What came of it was a scaled-up bar fight. The public, not knowing all the particulars of the convention, came to a collective conclusion that the winner would be the head of new world government. Never one to turn down a golden opportunity, the winner declared himself the Dictate and fashioned a government to his liking. Space development was the centerpoint of the new government. Along with a strong civil service to see to the people's need, the Dictate set upon making the home system an industrial powerhouse fit to conquer the rest of the universe. After achieving tech level 4, the Cazov sent their first survey squadron through the home system's only warp point. The new system was found to be without life-bearing worlds, though there were three more warp points. At this point the Dictate had the squadron return home, but only after leaving a marker on a uranium rich asteroid. This marker was considered by the Dictate as 'proof' that the system belonged to the Cazov. Why the Dictate had the squadron return and had the marker made wasn't fully explained, but it could be chalked up as the prime example of the race's underdeveloped sanity. The reason given (in official Cazov records at least) was that the Dictate wanted to further develop the space fleet before conducting more surveys. Twenty years and a new Dictate later saw the return of the Cazov to the new system. With the survey squadron forging ahead and the two escorting destroyer squadrons assumed powered down, holding positions near their entry warp point, it wasn't long before alien drive signatures were detected. This turned out to be the Gander Confederation. Initial contact was established and communications between the two races commenced. Two months passed, and the Gander came to the conclusion that the Cazov weren't entirely sane. Over and over the short-statured race said that the system belonged to them. Presented with the evidence of the marker, the Gander flatly stated in diplomatic terms that 'possession was nine-tenths of the law' and that the system had been in Gander possession for years. The expectation of anyone to find a simple piece of engraved metal on an asteroid proclaiming ownership of a entire system doesn't make for a valid claim. In response, and in equal diplomatic tones, the chief Cazov negotiator told his Gander counterpart that he agreed. Possession does indeed equate to ownership. So much so that the Cazov declared that, to ensure ownership of the system for his race, the Gander presence would be removed presently. Five seconds later the first salvo of standard missiles was launched directly at the Gander contact squadron. The anti-matter armed standard missiles came as a surprise for the Gander, but they had a double surprise of their own. Elsewhere in the system the other two Cazov squadrons, upon receiving tight-beam communications from the contact group, set upon nearby Gander shipping. Like the first group, they were attacked by Gander armed pinnaces and prototype gunboats. Of the twelve destroyers involved only two were allowed to escape so that the Gander could track them back to their entry warp point. Within a month the Gander and their Ahlon allies gathered enough force to send a major probe into the warp point. It was a route. The Cazov, which had already fortified their warp point, had reinforced it even more. Bases lashed out with x-ray lasers and missiles, minefields grounded the Gander gunboats, and fighters picked off those that broke through to the bases. Then came the counterattack a week later. Practically all the heavy cruisers and destroyers in the Cazov fleet made a simultaneous transit, creating a perimeter to allow the carriers to come through. In short order the Cazov controlled the space within fighter range of the warp point. The battle for the 'system of conflict', as the system of first contact became to be known, lasted 13 months. Feints, raids, and stand up battles were the order of the day. One pivotal battle was when a group of Gander construction ships, along with their cargo of prefabricated base components, were destroyed at their remote asteroid outpost. Gander and Ahlon ships by this time were equipped with anti-matter warheads, but the Cazov monopoly on strikefighters was the key factor. At the end of the 17th month the Cazov, after having secured the only warp point leading to Ahlon space, launched a warp point assault on the Gander home system. The first two waves through the warp point were the assault minesweepers. Firing gun missile mine clearance charges, the minesweepers started to clear a lane despite the pounding from Gander gunboats and pinnaces. Then, in the first time among the known races, the Cazov used warp-capable missile pods. The first wave obliterated all the Gander bases and a heafty proportion of the combat area patrol gunboats. After the destruction of the first two waves there was no follow-up by the Cazov part, leading the allies to believe that they had won. That was hardly the truth as four minutes later as the first of the assault carriers, backed up by a mass transit of cruisers and destroyers and another wave of pods boiled into the system. Despite their best efforts the allied ships were unable to destroy enough of the assault carriers in time to prevent them from launching. Though losses were severe for the Cazov the victory was theirs, as the second wave and then third wave of pods helped the fighters to rid the area around the warp point of gunboats. Once in formation, the Cazov fleet headed for the Gander homeworld. The underarmed space station and meager remnants of gunboat and armed pinnace squadrons were destroyed in short order. With the Gander still refusing to surrender Cazov decided to invade the planet and reinforce the assertion that 'possession is nine-tenths of the law'. Despite the need for hostile environment gear Cazov troops were landed. The ensuing campaign lasted five months with substantial Gander military casualties. Afterwards the occupation was relaxed, but in another quirk the Cazov had the home orbital forts and space stations they built in the system to be serviced by Gander personnel. This would prove pivotal in the later stages of the occupation. With the Gander home system secured the Cazov turned their attention to the remaining Gander colony systems. In short order they were conquered and preparations were made to assault the Ahlon. However, not wishing to have their world suffer a physical invasion the Ahlon surrendered. Now in possession of five conquered populated systems the Dictate of Cazov had the means (and certainly the will) to continue its expansionist policy. A colony was emplaced in each of the Gander and Ahlon home systems and shipyards constructed. Now no longer restricted by funding, the Cazov started the construction of dreadnoughts. It wasn't long before those ships saw combat as well. The Atomic Space Authority (ASA) This organization had its start before the invention of the reactionless drive. Beginning as a private company and using crude chemical rockets, ASA ships were able to colonize the homeworld's moon. When the reactionless drive was invented, and colonies emplaced throughout the home system, the Dictate declared that the primary focus of the ASA would be military in nature. Centered on missile and gun-armed destroyers and cruisers, the ASA readily accepted the invention of the strikefighter almost overnight. The change was so abrupt that one had to ascribe it as a physical manifestation of the Cazov mental character. X-ray laser technology was incorporated into a new class of battleship and heavy cruisers. Almost unique amongst heavy-gravity races, the Cazov do not suffer from the usual -1 to fighter initiative rolls. Also, in the field of R&D, the race has a bonus of 20%, after all other modifiers, when it comes to generating research points for general tech level advancement. Cazov Epiphany - The Advanced Gun Launcher Because, or in spite, of their mental makeup the Cazov developed a unique weapon system. Usten was the chief Cazov inventor of that race's version of the advanced gun/missile launcher. He also designed the electromagnetic catapult system used to launch fighters. It was recorded that Usten, after a particularly heavy night of partying and drinking, made a bet against a colleague that he could come up with the plans for a new missile launcher in one night. The bet was recorded, and Usten, driven by pride, followed through the next night and came up with the plans. Already a heavy drinker, Usten consumed so much alcohol in his overnight project that he barely handed over the plans to his lab assistant before dying on the spot from alcohol poisoning. Usten had managed to come up with a catapult system that could rapidly launch gun missiles. The ASA accepted the new weapon since it could be refitted on the Gunship destroyers and Containment heavy cruisers. The development of anti-matter ordnance made the rapid-fire ability of the Ga very attractive. It also made the deployment of anti-mine gun missile charges more practical. Aside from the Endril, no other race used the Ga. In the Endril case, the weapon was the result of finding a way of appreciably increasing the rate of fire of the gun system by adapting the technologies used for the advanced gun/missile launcher and capital gun/missile launcher. The Cazov resumed exploration four months after establishing a colony and starting construction of a shipyard complex in the Ahlon home system. One of these explorations lead into contact with the Sunrise Hegemony, a very low tech nine-system empire. Due to the great disparity in technology the Cazov only had to use minimal force to conquer the Hegemony in 16 months. Elsewhere, two transits out of Ahlon, a rather heavily armed survey group entered a system located within the home sector of the Fendalen Kingdom. Needless to say the Fendalens were rather concerned with the appearance of these new arrivals. Especially since the war against the Terpla'n lead Commonwealth of Planetary States started two months previous. As first contact was established with the Cazov a good portion of the Fendalen home sector fleet was called in, just in case. Partially due to their need to further consolidate their gains the Cazov decided not to attack. Another reason was that the short race found the Fendalens not to be outright threatening. That fact can be chalked up to the chief Fendalen negotiator on the scene, Knight of the Realm Lassig. Using diplomatic guile, Lassig had convinced the Cazov to enter a trade treaty. For both sides the income generated would be of great help. Thus, five months after first contact, the treaty was formalized and regular diplomatic relations established. Lassig was given the job of ambassador to the Cazov and would spend the better part of five years on the Cazov homeworld. In the meantime another survey group, also working out from the former Gander-held 'system of conflict', advanced slowly. The third system entered, via a closed warp point, was the Hokum home system, then partnered with the CPS. The Hokum system was the focus of the Fendalen's first offensive and thus had a heavy navy presence. First contact went rather badly, as the Cazov science team swore to the survey commander that the Hokum had insulted them. It was later found out that a common Hokum hand gesture was one that Cazov use to show contempt. For that moment, however, the commander took it upon himself to avenge the insult and attacked. Over half of the survey force was destroyed but the Hokum contact squadron was eliminated. Rather than returning home with the news the commander send courier drones back through the warp point and proceeded further in-system to gather more data. In short order the remaining ships were wiped out but not before sending out their last set of drones. The Dictate scarcely waited two days after getting word of what the drones carried before sending the fleet to the Hokum system. Since they only had a general idea where the warp point could be, but couldn't spare much in the way of ships to picket the area, the Hokum and CPS kept the majority of their forces at the contested warp point where the Fendalens were trying to enter the system. It was the worst of luck when the Cazov 1st Fleet entered the system just as the Fendalens launched their own assault. With no mobile forces for support the Hokum homeworld defenses were overwhelmed by the Cazov. In siege mode, the 1st Fleet stayed within weapons range of the planet as a quartet of survey squadrons set out to finish exploring the rest of the system. One of the squadrons detected the dying remnants of the warp point battle and made contact with the victorious Fendalen forces. In a surprize move, the Cazov offered to assist the Fendalens in conducting a planetary invasion of the Hokum homeworld. On the word from King Kysjyt himself the Fendalen commander on site allowed the Cazov to land troops on one side of the planet while his own forces took the other. Land combat lasted two months. At the end of hostilities the Cazov and Fendalens upgraded their treaty relationship to that of trade and military alliance. At the signing ceremony Ambassador Lassig was surprized to find the signing pens replaced with crayons. Not wanting to upset their new-found partners, he signed the treaty in crayon and officially had the blue-colored child's marker placed in a museum. A third survey group, also working along the same warp chain as the second, was held up upon receiving word from headquarters about the war against the Hokum. Two months later the group was allowed to proceed. The very next warp point explored (it, too, was a closed one) entered into a frontier system owned by the Gluv Mercantile Council. In this instance first contact went smoothly. In three months time a trade treaty was signed. At the celebratory dinner on the Gluv homeworld the Cazov ambassador learned that the Gluv had a trade treaty with the CPS. The ambassador, from all accounts, appeared to suffer a conniption and shot his opposite number from across the dinner table. Before the Cazov ambassador could fire again he was restrained by security and arrested. The ambassador was sent home along with an official letter that the Gluv had declared war on the Dictate. With the technology disparity between the two races, and even with what help the CPS was able to provide, it was clear after the first few battles that the Gluv were headed for defeat. Ceding its potion of conquered Hokum territory to the Fendalens, the Cazov sent the bulk of their current fleet to invade the Gluv home system. Taking heavy losses in the warp point assault, the Cazov fleet nonetheless followed through and broke into the system. The orbital works were taken out with long range missile fire. No land combat occurred as the Gluv surrendered rather than seeing their planet ruined by such fighting. Consolidating the conquest, the Cazov went on a total war footing, determined to help their Fendalen allies and to bring more systems under their control. Atomic Space Navy (ASN) Upon the completion of the Gluv conquest the Cazov Atomic Space Authority underwent a name change. This came about when the Dictate decided, on a whim, that ASN sounded better and had more 'dash' than ASA. Other than that detail, the ASN made significant improvements. Proton class dreadnoughts were built in yards in the Gander and Ahlon systems and the new Thunderhail battle carrier began to replace the Cloudburst fleet carriers. Gunboat racks were refitted on all active fleet units save the missile BCs and the ancient Projectile class FG. Atomic Space Admiral Nimbus The Cazov admiral in charge of the Gluv conquest was called Nimbus. Filled with equal measure of courage, inventiveness, and leadership, Nimbus was as close to what other races considered sane as a Cazov could get. He was, however, not without his quirks. Before launching the Gluv warp point assault Nimbus, in an address transmitted to the rest of the fleet, called upon his men to perform to the utmost of their abilities. To show his resolve, Nimbus chugged down a drink that had as a main ingredient powered uranium ore. Over the next four years he developed severe stomach ulcers and suffered frequent bouts of vomiting. Refusing to admit that the drink gave him radiation poisoning, Nimbus claimed among other things that he was expelling intestinal demons. A rather significant portion of his command, inspired by this act, also indulged in radioactive concoctions. Thanks to the intensity and violence of battle, many of these isotope idiots died before succumbing to the same results experienced by Nimbus. After capturing Gluv and its outlying colonies the Cazov went on the defensive in former Gluv space for six months while constructing warp point defenses in their expanded realm. Then, when they felt they were ready, a survey squadron was sent through an unexplored warp point in a former Gluv colony system. Upon exiting the squadron discovered rather quickly that the new system had multiple drive field signatures. In fact it was Nu-Foa, one of the two major extra-system possessions of the Foamasi. A substantial force of Foa ships was sent to investigate. The closed warp point from where the Cazov emerged was near one that lead to the home system, which was two transits away. The survey ships were intercepted before they moved further in-system and first contact procedures initiated. It went well, but Cazov insanity reared its ugly head when the chief representative literally tried to eat his Foamasi counterpart at the discussion table. Forcibly taken back to his shuttle, the Cazovian in question had the gall to ask if Foamasi were white or dark meat. The shuttle barely landed back on its ship as the Foa opened fired and destroyed the squadron. The courier drones got away, and shortly thereafter the Cazov began their conquest of Foamasi space Nu-Foa, the system the Cazov had entered, contained a medium-sized population. After winning control of the system the ASN decided to invade and occupy the planet. They did the same when they won control of the Foamasi home system, despite the extra cost incurred because of the need for hostile environment gear. Unable to go further into Foa space, the ASN assigned several task groups to assist their Fendalen allies on other fronts. Like the occupations of Gander and Gluv, the Cazov acted in their customary strangeness. Sometimes at checkpoints people where made to play hopscotch, while minor infractions of the law, like jaywalking, were punishable by death. And then, of course, there were the random shootings by patrolling troops. Guerrilla movements both on Foa and Nu-Foa formed and had plenty of motivation due to Cazovian antics. With no other warp points to explore in Gander, Gluv, and Foamasi space the ASN went with the Fendalen RN in finding new routes into CPS space. 31 months into the occupation of Foa a combined ASN/RN survey task group came upon a frontier world of a race called the Jazta. First contact went rather well, thanks in part the moderating influence of the Fendalen second-in-command, Prince Nassis. Then it happened. It was revealed in the talks that the Jazta were allied with another Fendalen nation, the Duchy of Xhali. On the Jazta flagship there was a Xhali prince, Hercul, conducting an inspection tour of the system at the time of the survey's arrival. On the Cazov side, Prince Nassis was there because he was empowered to enter negotiations with any foreign power encountered in the course of the survey mission. Back in the civil war that destroyed the original High Kingdom there were two groups of survivors that journeyed far and wide, separately, to find new homes for their people. Now faced with the truth that the other side had survived the two Fendalens began talking. Had the Cazovian shut up, the war against the CPS would've ended differently. Instead the commander, Nimrod, after reading documentation on the civil war and consulting a genealogical chart, cut into a live feed between the two princes. With bombastic flare Nimrod called Hercul a 'false prince' and that he should swear allegiance, in accordance to Fendalen law, to Nassis. It didn't end there, for he went on saying in so many words "we rule you", referencing the Fendalen/Cazov alliance. Both Hercul and Nassis grew angry. Nassis had gone as far as ordering his portion of the survey task group to generate firing solutions on Nimrod's ship. Nimrod saved the worst for last. Had he been actor, Nimrod would've won an award for saying this directly to Hercul's image on the view screen - "All your space are belong to us." His reply came in the form of force beams and antimatter warheads from both sides. Hercul and his Jazta allies had their firing solutions on Nimrod's ship as well. The fireball that had been Nimrod's ship hardly died out as both Nassis and Hercul ordered their ships to attack the other. What Cazov courier drones that did launch were command detonated by a coded signal from Nassis. The drones blew up one light hour shy of the warp point. Nassis did manage to pull what was left of his command out of battle and out of the system. His survey ships were equipped with cloak, and the Cazov ships, the focus of the Hercul's initial attacks, were all destroyed. Thanks to those circumstances, and some database editing, the Cazov had to take the word of Nassis of what happened to the ships. King Kysjyt and the very top levels of the Royal Navy learned the truth, and began to draw plans to rid themselves of their Cazov allies at the proper time. Thanks to the intervention of that short, heavy-gravity race the war against the CPS, which was going favorably for Kysjyt, made an irreversible turn for the worse. Atomic Space Navy (ASN) Notes Tech Level 11 was reached just as the Foamasi homeworld was invaded. First priority was given to the development of command datalink and its associated datalink point defense. Anti-laser armor was introduced quickly thanks to technical help provided by the Cazov's Fendalen allies. Oddly, the ASN never developed cloaking ECM. They felt it was 'cheating', despite the fact that both Fendalens and the CPS put the system to use immediately after inventing it. Joint operations between the RN and the ASN became unnecessarily difficult because of this deliberate Cazovian refusal. For the better part of two years the ASN spent a good deal of resources on updating and increasing warp point defenses throughout the Dictate. Refits for frontline ships was done in a patchwork manner as the new technologies became available. Work on the first batch of Electron SDs was held up until command datalink became available. Not having first-hand information on what became of the ships assigned to Fendalen Prince Nassis' survey task group the Cazov had to take what the Royal Navy said at face value. Eager as ever to engage in combat, the Dictate welcomed the challenge of the newly-found Duchy of Xhali and their Jazta allies. Battling along the explored warp line with the Royal Navy by their side, the Dictate expected another level of conquest to add to their empire. What the Cazov did not know was that Fendalen King Kysjyt and the top brass of the RN had reached a decision. They had overlooked the various small eccentricities of the Cazov in general and of their ASN commanding officers in particular. Atomic Admiral Cirrus, for example, often commanded his fleet from the confines of his hot tub, even during battle. What couldn't be tolerated was the new front created by the now dead Nimrod. At the very least Kysjyt wanted a neutral Xhali Duchy so that the war with the Commonwealth could be concluded on his terms. Now with that possibility gone the hope of a decisive set of battles was removed as well. Indeed, given the random acts of seeming insanity the Dictate himself engaged in had Kysjyt wonder if the Cazovian leader had bigger plans. It wasn't all together impossible that, with his own forces overtaxed by the Xhali fleet, Kysjyt could face a Cazovian seizure of his frontier systems. Gathered in secretive meetings with top RN officers and royal officials the Fendalen King constructed a plan to rid himself of his now unwanted ally. To be sure, the illusion of alliance was maintained and then some. New task groups were sent to aid the ASN on the Xhali front, as well as the construction of forward warp point bases. Employing his guile, Kysjyt gave the Dictate the right to conquer any asteroidal and planetary population, Xhali and Jazta, that happen to be encountered. When given that delicious bait the Dictate didn't hesitate. 60% of the ASN was tasked to the Xhali frontier. It took four months for the transfer to be complete, and when it was the RN was ready. For its part the ASN incurred significant casualties battling Jazta and Xhali alike. The slow reduction of RN ships was taken as proof of Kysjyt's pledge of letting the ASN have the place of honor in conquering the new foes. Committed to a fresh offensive, the ASN 3rd Fleet took the lead while Fendalen Task Forces 83 and 84 (forming a third of the carrier strength) went into cloak to assume a 'support' position. The following battle was a rout. Admiral Cirrus, fully confident and utterly ignorant of his ally's plan, approached the 2nd Duchy Fleet head-on. With the opinion that cloaking ECM was 'cheating', the ASN didn't develop the technology as their Fendalen allies had done. This fact was known to the Xhali and Jazta, and used their cloaks in deception mode, making their larger warships appear as lighter units. When Cirrus sent the pre-arranged signal to TFs 83 and 84 he was surprized by the lack of a reply. Those ships weren't where they were supposed to be, and in fact were following Kysjyt's secret orders. Under cloak, those ships had slipped away, heading back to the previous system to reinforce the warp point defenses. Missing a full third of his fighters, and finding that the bulk of the enemy were actually battleships and larger, Cirrus elected to close the range anyway with his heavy units while his battlecruisers and lighter ships made a run back to their warp point. What ASN fighters and gunboats that survived the clash caught up with the fleeing carriers and light units and protected them from Xhali long range fighter strikes. Fuming in rage, Cirrus' surviving senior officer made transit first, intent on getting his hands on the Fendalen commander in charge of the two task forces. What he got instead was instant death as the minefields and combat-ready forts smothered his ship and each subsequent ship that followed until the 3rd Fleet was utterly destroyed. What happened in that system was repeated many times as Cazov transponder codes were deleted from the IFF systems of minefield controllers. The most gruesome case was when a planetary invasion force, 150,000 strong, was wiped out by minefields and patrolling gunboats in just under five minutes. Hostile environment colonies, planted along the way to support the fleet's advance, were isolated by the RN and bombarded. With all that was happening to them the Cazov were effectively crippled. Unable to mount an effective offense, the ASN fell upon its carefully built line of warp point defenses while scrambling to assemble a new fleet. With its central location in relation to the Fendalens, the CPS and its beleaguered allies, the Dictate himself thought he could hold onto his realm with the forces at hand. Had the opportunity been present, the Dictate was of the mind to pull the limbs off of Ambassador Lassig. As it was, Kysjyt had Lassig and 80% of Fendalen personnel on Cazov return home for a 'religious ceremony'. The R&D assistance outpost on Ahlon was removed in full, citing the 'need to cut extraneous budget spending'. Any other race would seen such measures as very suspicious, but the sanity-lacking paranoid Cazov hardly cared or noticed. After all, they believed that they were winning the war single-handedly and had no need for further technical help. In the landslide of crumbling morale that followed the abrupt death of the alliance the Dictate had to express his frustration in some manner. Thirty Fendalens, including the assistant ambassador, were rounded up and placed in the embassy on Cazov. All life support to the building was cut and the natural atmosphere and pressure was allowed to enter, killing the occupants in under an hour. King Kysjyt would later write in his memoirs that the decision to leave some people behind on Cazov to maintain the illusion of normality was the hardest one to make during his reign. Hardly had the former Fendalen embassy was razed to the ground that the Dictate got more bad news. The CSF launched an offensive to liberate Gluv space. If it succeeded then the route home for the forces in Foamasi space would be cut off. In an effort to maximize the Cazov's dilemma, and ship losses, the CSF and HSF staged an assault from the Balta system to liberate the Foamasi homeworld. Both assaults were successful, but massive casualties were incurred on both allied homeworlds. Cazov troops and ships at Nu-Foa were fully evacuated before the arrival of allied fleets, bestowing an intact base of operations to sustain the drive to Cazov Prime. The RN added insult to the Cazov's injury by staging a 'rescue' of the Ahlon race. Lassig, as part of his ambassadorial duties, had made contact with the Ahlon. A race that was conquered and forced into partnership with the Cazov, the Ahlon resented their predicament. When word came of the broken alliance and reverses of the ASN fleet Lassig, on his way back to the capital, informed his contacts in the Bureau of Government about the RN's plan. In this instance the information was quite safe since even the Cazov couldn't penetrated the Byzantine relations and hierarchies that made up Ahlon government. Thus, with a modest assault force and ample carrier support the RN broke both sets of warp point defenses leading to the Ahlon home system. Along with the 15-ship force allowed to the Ahlon by the Cazov, the RN hunted down and destroyed the ASN mobile system defense force, the orbital ASN shipyards and the hostile environment settlement that supported it. With no other populations to rescue the RN stood fast and fortified the warp point that lead to the Ahlon's only other pre-war system. Other that a pair of dispirited probes the Cazov made no attempt to recapture the system. Advancing along the warp chain leading back to Cazov Prime the CSF encountered a few hostile environment colonies used to support the ASN warp point defenses. Hazen and E'san ground troops attempted to occupy the colonies but encountered heavy, determined and even demented resistance. Combat in the enclosed spaces of a colonial habitat quickly resembled that of a deadly haunted house. Not wanting to incur further losses in such an unproductive exercise the CSF removed their troops, but not before wrecking the industrial potential of those colonies in the process. The Gander, conquered and subjugated by the Cazov a few year earlier, had got gleanings about the collapsing nature of the Dictate. Though it had no contact with the Fendalens, even with individuals such as Ambassador Lassig, due to stringent security protocols, the Gander underground decided that the time was right to conduct a general insurrection. When word came of the loss of Ahlon to the Fendalens, a fact that the Cazov couldn't keep to themselves even if they wanted to, the underground acted on their plans. The small orbital station and orbital forts were seized intact, as well as the life support equipment of the ground occupation forces. As for the hostile environment settlement, located on the system's second planet, the Gander couldn't do anything at the time to secure it or the shipyards that orbited it. Determined to crush the uprising, despite the loss of the ground troops (which had by this time died either in combat or suffocated), the warp point defense commander had his entire retinue of bases towed to within weapons range of the Gander orbitals. The small tugs were destroyed but so were the seized forts. The towed forts were damaged to a greater or lesser extent, but the commander was unable to follow through with a planetary bombardment due to an utter lack of ammunition. Upon hearing the news the Dictate had a conniption. Literally busting a vein, he ordered the destruction of the three extra-system Gander colonies that had been conquered years earlier. With the rapidity of the CSF advance there was little time to pull out the ground garrisons, so using his supreme authority he had those troops stay planet-side and do a complete job of killing the colonists. For the Gander home system he sent a freighter, fully loaded with missiles and fighter ordnance. Just as the freighter entered the 'System of Conflict' (the one that connected the Cazov and Gander home systems) the CSF launched it assault. Already in the system was a CSF survey task group, having entered via a closed warp point two months earlier. While the ASN was engaged with the first assault a much smaller but stealthy force came through the closed point and savaged all the Cazov shipping it encountered. Meanwhile, the survey group was tracking a lone ship that, despite being in comm range of other Cazov ships, was making a beeline for as yet an unknown destination. That ship was the resupply freighter, and it was intercepted and destroyed by the survey group. Acting on a hunch, the survey commander searched for warp points along the freighter's path. Five days past before it was found, and it was shortly afterwards that the existence of the Gander race was discovered and the Cazov forts destroyed. Now utterly alone and facing defeat, the Dictate had only a short wait before the home system was invaded. Without hard facts on the defenses it would be facing the CSF decided to make a mass transit consisting of minesweepers, missile ships, fleet and battle carriers. 50 ships in all erupted in the face of ASN defenses. Three minesweepers and three carriers interpenetrated on entry and were destroyed. But 240 fighters and 200 gunboats swarmed from their motherships to engage their ASN counterparts and warp point forts. Courier drones sent back targeting data for the waiting warp-capable missile pods as the sweepers made progress on clearing a lane for follow-up waves. Like what the Axis had done before the Cazov placed what remained of their fleet, at a low-level state of readiness, 16 light-seconds from the warp point. In the first few minutes the fleet stirred, crews assuming battle stations, ships activating their predetermined datagroups, energizing weapons and engines. After nine minutes the fleet moved, launching fighters and gunboats as it closed on the growing number of allied capital ships. By that time most of the forts were destroyed or damaged by two waves of missile pods and fire from enemy units. Thanks to the thickness of the minefields and damage done by the energy buoys to the minesweepers the allied ships had only just cleared the primary minefield as the ASN fleet (except the carriers and their escorts, still holding station at the 16 light-minute mark) closed to within capital missile range. Eighty-four ASN destroyers, including their light cruiser command ships, went to full speed and lunged at the allied fleet. Those ships formed the bulk of what was left of the ASN, and given the deadly effectiveness that the second-generation gun missile gave to those destroyers the allies had to divert their fire from the Cazov capital units. Covered by their own fighters and gunboats on the way in, a significant number of destroyers closed to within weapons range of the allied fleet, targeting the larger dreadnoughts and monitors. Allied commanders always knew that ASN destroyer captains always sought to close the range. Clearly it was a mass ramming attack, but not all of those ships were going to do so, even though the range was suicidaly close. Ten destroyers, armed with the new suicide rider warhead, succeeded in their rams and caused catastrophic damage to two monitors and heavily damaged four dreadnoughts. Three others barely missed their targets but used the proximity blast effect of their warheads to inflict substantial damage. ASN missile ships finished off the cripples. With the death of those six ships came an end to further loss of heavy allied units. Gunboats and fighters tore into the Reactor battlecruisers and Fusion monitors, gutting them like fish prepared by a master chef. 20 minutes after the mass transit the battle was over, the allies suffering 22% casualties while the ASN lost all of its warships. On the way to Cazov Prime the allied fleet destroyed the last of the Cazov ships, the fleet auxiliaries, which were gathered into a task group to serve as a mobile reserve for gunboat operations. Once within 20 light-seconds of the planet the fleet started to deploy missile pods to take out the orbitals and the pair of space stations. It was here that the Dictate contacted the allied fleet commander. He launched into a five minute diatribe on how the Cazovian people will still emerge victorious despite the obvious setbacks. Saying that it was a matter of dedication and the will to win the Dictate proudly showed off a large, red, candy-like button. Marked in Cazovian script on that button was the phrase 'self-destruct'. The off-balanced ruler pressed the button with glee. Like a carefully choreographed fireworks display both nuclear and anti-matter warheads detonated on Cazov. Afterwards it was calculated that each square kilometer of planetary surface experienced the effects of one kiloton of explosive force. The Dictate and his command complex was the last to be destroyed in this deliberate act of planetary suicide. His image of unwarranted confidence and defiant last words formed the capstone to the Cazovian involvement in the war: "Well, we sure showed you, didn't we?" The colonies and outposts in the Cazov system also suicided, undoubtedly receiving a coded signal from the Dictate before pressing the button. What extra-solar colonies that were left couldn't be saved, for Cazovians couldn't stand confinement or even the thought of being subjugated. Even prisoners caught earlier in the war mysteriously lost the will to live and died, leading to speculation that the Cazov had some subconscious racial telepathy. Whatever the cause, only eleven Cazovians, including Admiral Nimbus, were what all was left of a race of eight billion. Nimbus lasted the longest in this group of eleven, living on for an additional 100 years. In comparison to the rest of his kind, he was a mild eccentric. But the lasting image the rest of the galaxy had of the Cazov was that of the Dictate pressing the self-destruct button like it was a light switch. Atomic Space Navy (ASN) Notes Having achieved Tech Level 12 just before the fateful incident with the Xhali the ASN received the last, and largest, research assistance from the Fendalens in the form of datalinked capital point defense. Second generation shields, composite armor, and overload dampeners were the other three technologies to receive priority funding and development. Other projects, such as the second generation capital energy beam, second generation gun missile, and fourth generation fighters were given normal funding. When the alliance with the Fendalen Kingdom abruptly collapsed the ASN R&D Bureau had the energy beam and new gunboat projects placed on the fast track for development. Still, oddly enough, cloaking ECM remained untouched. It still remains a mystery to this day why such a useful technology went unused by the ASN. Aside from the idea that using such as system was 'cheating', the only plausible theory to emerge was the ASN's doctrine of advancing towards an objective at all cost. Getting to that objective while cloaked would add an element of surprize, but it would come at the cost of space that could've been used for weapons, and weapons were the tools that actually won battles. This view stayed with the ASN right up to the end, and the cost was high indeed. Only one other project managed to see active use, albeit briefly, before the destruction of the Cazov race - the suicide rider warhead. Considering the cost and very limited use the SR wouldn't have been built, but the Dictate saw the R&D proposal. Always found of big explosions the Dictate authorized funding for the SR, moving it ahead of the datalink jammer buoy. Arguably this decision possibly denied the Cazov of prolonging the home system warp point battle, thus increasing allied casualties. The allies were certainly thankful for the lack of jammer buoys, even though it lost six ships to destroyer-sized bombs. The ASN was still a carrier force when it came to resource allocation and priority of construction. Next to carriers came the destroyers. To the end Gunship and Laser Sweeps were produced in large numbers. With the advent of the second generation gun missile Gunships regained a measure of effectiveness and posed a true threat to enemy capital ships. Reactor battlecruisers were next, followed by dreadnoughts, superdreadnoughts, heavy cruisers, and then battleships. One new wrinkle was the addition of the Radiation class cruiser. Armed with capital energy beams, Radiations took advantage of the damage caused by Gunship datagroups, allowing their beams to inflict the most damage without first having to bring down the target's shields. |

The ASN didn't employ armed pinnaces (which they referred to as The Gander Weapon) anywhere near the numbers the Gyst did, let alone the Hokum and CPS. The flight groups on Roll Clouds and Wall Clouds were used exclusively for warp point assaults and weren't based on any other platform (aside from the Bell Curve survey frigates) or planet for that matter. On a sidenote the Cazov was the only race to develop and deploy (albeit in very limited numbers) an advanced version of an assault shuttle that, while lacking an internal fighter weapon, could carry almost as much external ordnance as a second generation armed pinnace. All other races developed a more conservative, logical version of the assault shuttle at Tech Level 14. |

Ai to 3 Ac2. 956mc/143.4mc (S2x10)[AI2(Ac2x3)x3] The ASA, immediately after the conquest of the Ahlon, came to the conclusion that it needed a craft capable of providing extended long-range sensor coverage for fleet formations. Scout ships were readily detectable, and prototype gunboats, armed pinnaces and recon fighters equipped with fXR or fXR packs didn't have the endurance. However, instead of creating the recon pinnace the ASA went a different route. An updated version of the assault shuttle was pursued for reasons only known to the ASA Board of Technical Development. While unloaded life support endurance was half that of a pinnace it can be said the new craft only required the same amount of boat bay space that a regular pinnace needed, and that it had fighter external ordnance racks and much more capable point defense mount. A typical ASA fleet would have three Crow's Nests, and those assigned to troop transport flotillas often used their shuttles for ground support. Even when it became aware of the recon pinnace upon possession of scanner data and even technical notes from its Fendalen ally the ASA (later the ASN) continued its use of the shuttle. However, it did supplement the shuttles with first generation gunboats when that technology was developed. |

The Leap and Look class (otherwise known as the Lalas) was a quick and relatively inexpensive solution, at least from the Cazov perspective. The first 72 examples were used in a mass transit of the Ahlon home system warp point and gathered the required targeting data for the ensuing missile pod bombardment. With only 24 built after the Gander War the Lalas were used very infrequently to supplement Particle Collider probes. |

Unlike the warp point swarm designs used by other races the Paricle Collider class had just one purpose: collect grav surge data on previously unexamined warp points held by enemy forces. The magazine was mostly empty, holding just mine clearance charges as the ship was meant to transit back immediately after collecting its data. No further examples built after the introduction of the Particle Collider 2 class. |

When it was observed that the Particle Collider warp point probe ships weren't needed in their original role the 18 of the 20 assigned to the Boarder Task Group were refitted as scouts. They soon earned the reputation as space station and base killers, knocking them out from beyond the reach of their standard launchers. After the war the class was refitted to suit the needs of the ongoing war with the Commonwealth. |
