NIGHTMESSENGER
NOVA's Quarterly Newsletter
Vol. 4, No. 4, Winter 2040
OPENING FIRE
Let it snow, let is snow, let it snow! Winter is upon us and an angry old man in a red suit is screaming about SDI shooting down his reindeer. Merry Christmas to all! Hope you got what you want in your stockings.
Aeroduel, Car Wars Tanks and Car Wars - The Card Game are now out on the shelves. I know that SDI is just space junk, but don't fly so high or you'll end up being a night's entertainment for a bored orbital weapon satellite. Car Wars Tanks has gone to the printer with "minimal changes" and I won't comment on it's ramifications.
NOVA held it's club championship last November. This year it was held at the Holiday Park Arena in Wyoming. See "The World Out There" section for more details.
Finally, all the elections are over. Happy? Personally I'm sick of all the mudslinging. The voters get hit with most of the mud flying around. More on this later.
ASP has made it plain that it thinks little of Nebraska and especially NOVA. Could this be war? We'll just have to wait and see.
NOVA WORKS
Has anyone seen Uncle Al? He's been gone for two years now. That's a bit long for a vacation. He never answers his phone. Very peculiar.
Well, NOVA is proud to keep introducing new duelling items for everyone's duelling needs. Accessories are spotlighted in this issue.
Intercooler: $3,000 plus $1 for each additional power factor. This device doubles the efficiency of a turbocharger from 25% to 50% by cooling the air forced into the engine. This decreases the volume of the entering air, enabling more air to enter.
Rifle-Turret Attachment: $500, adds 50 lbs and 1.4x the weight of the desired hand weapon to a one-space turret. The weapon must be modified to fit in the turret and interface with the vehicle's computers (weapon cost). The turret holds and feeds two extra loads of ammunition for the weapon. When the weapon is removed it still only holds one clip of ammo. Consider the weapon to have one DP if under 20 lbs., two DP if more than 20 lbs. Weapons may be removed/replaced with a firing action while standing adjacent to the vehicle.
Hawk Gear: $20,000, 400 lbs., 4 DP and 4 spaces. The hawk gear combines car and airplane capabilities similar to the grasshopper modifications. It can be applied to mid-sizes, sedans, and luxuries cars. Telescoping wings, tail assembly, and a propeller come out of panels on the sides and rear of the car. No weapons can be mounted in and on the wings. Wing DP is 12, propeller DP is 4. Wings can be targeted at a +2 from the top and bottom and -1 from the sides. Propellers can be targeted at -4 and the tail assembly at -2. Hawks can't have turrets. They use either the mini or small helicopter power plant.
The wing extension takes a full turn to activate, during which the side panels slide back, the wings telescope out to full length. It then takes three full seconds to warm up the propeller and can take off when the correct speed is attained. In the air a hawk-equipped car's acceleration, maximum speed, and maneuvers are determined by the aircraft rules. Hawk ground speeds are based on the car rules.
Pilot skill is needed to fly a hawk-equipped car. The hawk's aerial HC is 2 and uses the car HC on the ground. Hawks may use heavy lift or STOL wings, wing armor, maneuvering foils, jet engines (with or without VTOL capabilities) and rocket engines.
THE WORLD "OUT THERE”
As you probably noticed Norman McMullen had his SDI Newswatch published in ADQ 8-3. This has made some people ask whether SDI is active or not. If it is, then most likely it works in space only, not in the atmosphere. Lasers will degrade in an atmosphere and high-velocity rockets would burn up from friction. SDI was designed to destroy ICBM warheads in mid-flight in space by lasers and rockets. It cannot shoot down helicopters, airplanes, cruise missiles, airships, or any other airborne vehicle. SDI is not going to bring our civilization back from all the disasters that affect us. It is not the ultimate weapon so much as the atom bomb of the 1950's was proclaimed as such.
Some of you might have noticed the "A Lie for a Lie" adventure featuring Nebraska. This is a direct result of one of Death's attacks in Missouri. Specifically it was an attack on an ASP base outside of Springfield, Missouri on the same day as the 2039 Midwest Regional. Why attack Nebraska? ASP wanted to prove that it can attack a state; not a city, not an organization, not a building, but a whole state. Who is running this ASP organization, Daffy Duck?
You'll be happy to know that the ASP attack was unsuccessful. All four attacking Mambas were shot down by the Nebraskan Air National Guard and little damage was down by the raiders. The National Guard and NOVA are now investigating the incident with hopes of shutting down ASP completely. We'll expose the cowardly ASP in the sunlight.
In mid-November ASP struck a NOVA-escorted convoy and destroyed it. This definitely means war, and ASP member life spans have just shorten greatly. We will keep you updated on our war with ASP.
The elections are over and aren't you happy? Personally, I'm sick of the politicians's ads. Who could you believe? Are they throwing plasticrete just for the fun of it? Unlikely. In Iowa a pro-duelling bill barely passed into law. This bill allows for more arenas in the state. This is good news for duelling supporters. However, the anti-duelling forces are promising a fight. The situation could turn ugly. We'll keep you posted.
NOVA was unable to attend Quad-Con '90 due to scheduling difficulties. We were all prepared to leave. Maybe we'll attend next year (cross your fingers). So instead we held a tournament at Impact 0.3, a one-day gaming con designed to raise money for the main convention, Impact 1. Our own Don Viner won over a couple of older NOVA players. For details see the "In The Arena" section. We are currently trying to get the 2041 Midwest Regional at Impact 0.6 (which will be in April).
Our club championship took place on November 11. Tim Jacques was the winner. Details are in "In The Arena" section.
The New Omaha Police and City Council has started reviewing the results of testing jet-powered interceptors. A few councilmen expressed that "they are not cost-effective to have", "too expensive and too fast", and "they aren't needed". On the other side were the Police praising the capabilities of such interceptors. Lines have been drawn, and the final report will be in the Mayor's Office in January.
If your a late-night movie fan then you know of the Ninja Master. He is known mainly as the host of those bad martial arts movie shows. Recently he has challenged and killed several famous martial artists. No Gun is his present target. No Gun is unconcerned as he is relaxing after his time on the monster vehicle circuit. The only comment No Gun made on the Ninja Master was "Who?".

August 1991: GenCon '91. The World Racing Championship will be held here. In 1992 GenCon and Origins will be held together again in 1992, just as it was in 1988. It was interesting, but a mess.
MOVIE RELEASES
Soon-to-be-released: Highlander 2 - The Quickening.
January: Eve of Destruction.
Not much in the way of Car Wars-related films. If you haven't seen the Memphis Belle then by all means go and do so. It will give you a feel of what Aeroduel is all about.
GAME NEWS
In The Arena
This issue will cover two major arena events that took place this fall: The Impact 0.3 Tournament and the Club Championship.
Impact 0.3 Tournament
There was a very low turnout for this event with only three duellists entering: Don Jacques, Norman McMullen, and Don Viner. The arena was Carter Lake and the vehicles were Division 30 cars.
Everyone came out of their gates and closed on the center jumps with no combat taking place. Jacques circled the jumps, Viner went between them, and McMullen went over them. Just before making his jump McMullen did a tight bend so he could land on top of a surprised Viner. McMullen fired his 3 RRs into Viner's top and did considerable damage. Viner slowed as Jacques came around the opening between the jumps only to get ambushed by McMullen. Jacques turned away with McMullen staying to Jacques's damaged left side. They worked to the outer wall while jockeying for firing positions. Jacques fired his rear-mounted FT at McMullen's side, catching it on fire. McMullen fired some more rounds in Jacques, killing the duellist in the process.
McMullen turned towards Viner. He intercepted him near the bottom of two jumps. Viner ignited his FOJs to block McMullen from chasing him between the jumps. McMullen fired into Viner's side at point-blank range, doing good damage, and jumped over the vehicle. Viner gave chase and fired his BC into McMullen's side and rear. The damage from the BC shells and the fire from the FT force McMullen to exit the arena. Viner came in first, with McMullen second and Jacques a literal dead third.
2040 Club Championship
The competitors this year were Jay Chladek, Tim Jacques (last year's champ), Don Viner, Shea Montgomery, Don "RR" Jacques, and Norman McMullen. The arena was the Holiday Park and before the event debris and obstacles were scattered across the ground. The duellists started from their assigned gates along the walls.
The green starting light blazed to life. Viner fired two WGMs in the second turn of the event, targeting Chladek. Chladek turned towards RR. Meanwhile Norman turned towards Viner and scored a hit with his ATG. Tim fired at Shea with an AC. Viner's WGMs missed Chladek and slammed into a wall before they could turn around.
Shea accelerated and tried to get away from Tim to no avail. Viner started moving slow and Norman missed with his second shot. Viner tagged Norman with his side-mounted LFT. Chladek chased RR towards Norman. Shea unexpectedly lost control, suffered a minor skid and went into a spin-out. Since he had only standard tires they blew out. The car came to an abrupt halt and Shea became the first kill as Tim fired an AC into him.
Norman and Viner traded shots as they passed each other. Norman set off some explosive spikes Viner left behind. Viner then fired his rear MFR, doing considerable front armor damage to Norman. Chladek, RR, and Tim were now closing in on Viner. As he was passed by Norman, Viner did a bootlegger to face Chladek. Chladek rammed Viner at 100 mph fired his MPRL to add to the damage. Tim rammed into Chladek's right side, pushing him away from his heavily damaged opponent. As Viner rolled backwards RR fired his weapons into Viner's front, destroying the power plant. Chladek spun out and was hit by Tim. The shot breached the gas tank and it caught fire.
Chladek ejected from his car. Tim fired his HAVR at Viner's front, killing the driver. Norman and RR accelerated up to top speed and started to circle. Tim maneuvered through the obstacles and debris. Chladek's wreck exploded in a pretty red fireball.
Norman and RR took turns hitting Tim's front and rear armor. Tim did a bootlegger and RR fired a few rounds in the rear, killing the driver. RR then went after Norman. The ATG was gone after RR took out the weak front armor. Norman raced towards an exit and dropped two flash grenades that RR easily avoided.
Final Points:
Tim Jacques 21 Don Jacques 11
Norman McMullen -3 Shea Montgomery -6
Don Viner -7 Jay Chladek -8

LOCAL HERO
No Gun
by Norman "Stormin'" McMullen
No Gun was unavailable for a personal interview. His press file provided for the majority of the information in this article. It is unknown what No Gun's birth name is. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to an Asian mother and an American father in 2010. We can only assume he spent his childhood there and learned his amazing martial arts and sword skills during the food riots. At 18 he enlisted in the National Guard and was sent to the mainland. Within a year he joined the Commando Training program and excelled in it. In his six-year tour in the Guard he learned to drive tanks and hovercraft.
He decided to "make a homestead" in New Omaha and joined NOVA in 2034. His first memorable feat was during the Lightning Bug's airship bombing of New Omaha in 2037. When fighting inside the airship No Gun took on the Ninja guards. Deflecting sword blows, No Gun placed a limpet mine on one Ninja. The Ninja was still seen frantically trying to tear off the mine when it went off. The resulting explosion caused the loss of helium and hastened its demise.
After this event he applied for a job at Ratner Taxi. A few weeks into the job No Gun got a fare that took him into a rundown suburb and refused to pay. Following strict company guidelines he killed the fare and made his way out of the dreg-infested area in his customized Ram Taxi.
During the summer No Gun entered the Duelling Circuit. At the New Boston Arena he entered a Division 10 event. The duel was drawn out with No Gun and John Generic tied for first. Seeing no way to end the duel with cars, both duellists decided to end the fight with fists. After a few rounds of hitting No Gun laid in the decisive blow and hospitalized John. No Gun received national attention from that event.
The next few years are strewn with rumors. It is known he joined Varean Investigations for some time until he started his own company, Safe Securities. It's rumored No Gun stopped terrorism in the metro area. DSI (Defense Systems International) is said to have hired No Gun on occasions where his talents were most needed. What his roll was in the downfall of DSI is unclear. As of last year the rumor of him being a trainer in Omega Force (a private army) has been going around. He could've been on government missions if the rumors are true.
2040 was the year No Gun joined the Monster Truck Circuit with his now-famous monster tank, the New Omaha Beast. Unfortunately, another duellist copied the design and tied with No Gun for first place. Instead of a fist fight they settled by splitting the prize money. Because of other commitments No Gun could only enter monster truck events on a bi- monthly basis. He has burned up the circuit with his numerous kills. A current nominee for Rookie of the year, No Gun is regarded as a strong contender for winning the circuit.
No Gun is best known for using no handweapons. He uses swords, throwing stars, and martial art skills. Some people claim he can dodge bullets and kill with a single blow. His five foot, seven inch frame conceals his potent skills and many an opponent regret challenging him to a fist fight. With black blended body armor (looking like a t-shirt and jeans), he comes in at 150 lbs., and has black hair and brown eyes. He prefers fists or swords and throwing stars. His skills are Driver +4, Gunner +6, Martial Arts +6, Explosives +3, Stealth +5, Handgunner +4, Tank Driver +6, Archaic Weapons +4, Investigation +5, Lockpicking +2, Parachute +1, Pilot +1, Security +2, Survival +2, Trucker +1, and Law +1.
As you noticed his has a surprisingly good handgunner skill. This is due to the fact that he learned handgunner skill in the National Guard and used it during his tour. The only handweapon No Gun will use in an arena other than swords and throwing stars is a grenade launcher.
CUBE LOGS
One of our members has nicknamed the Steven Seagal films as No Gun Films because they remind him of No Gun at work and play! No Gun has more in common with the Destroyer/Remo Williams series than with Seagal.
Memphis Belle - This movie tells the story of the first B-17 crew to complete 25 combat missions. The air combat sequences are well done. Listen carefully so you'll know what the terms Snafu and headhunters (among others) mean. It's Aeroduel in all of its glory. ****
Airwolf Series - Your brain should be disconnected if you believe the Airwolf copter can do everything that it does in the series. The American seasons has several notable episodes to watch. The Canadian produced episodes can be ignored altogether. The bright spots are few and far between. Villains are two-dimensional and the combat scenes are stock footage from other sources. **
Firebirds - It's either the Army's Top Gun or a pale imitation. Both views may be correct. The film centers on an Apache pilot coming of age with his feelings and attitude on life. The action comes in the form of taking out a mercenary helicopter pilot in league with a South American drug lord. The story is half-decent with good combat footage. Look out for the "I am the Greatest" simulator scene. ***
Octapussy - This James Bond film may not be the best, but it does have some halfway decent air combat scenes. The BD-5J was good until it was chased by a missile. Boy, you could hardly see those strings! This film also had some nice hot air balloon stunts. Finally, Octapussy shows that you never fight on the outside of an airborne plane without a parachute. Wear earplugs so you won't have to listen to Roger Moore's ill-timed puns. **
RETURN FIRE
To refresh you memories this section is for mail covering the previous issue(s). Since 4-1, 2, and 3 came withing a month between them this section was dropped for a lack of time and mail.
The mail has been steady from our new member, Michael Garrity of Rhode Island. He's been sending gadgets and adventures for quite a while. We recently received "The Road Kill" from Carlos McReynolds of Miami and FLAGGS, issue 2-1. Glad to see another newsletter and more Car Wars insanity. Carlos goes by the duelling name The Caveman and on the BBS. The Road Kill is a good newsletter. It is humorous and covers their activities. The humor is Monty Python/Pink Floyd based and is very strange. We hope to set up a newsletter exchange program with them. If you ever get in touch with Carlos ask about the newsletter. Good going Caveman!
One of our irregulars is Craig Sheeley, author of Aeroduel and Car Wars Tanks. He has informed us that he will be doing the latest Uncle Al catalog which he has personally called The Catalog From Hell. He asked NOVA to send him inventions. Craig, NOVA has two NOVA Works Catalogs and could do a third without raising a sweat. The question is will he give us credit for the items in Aeroduel and Car Wars Tanks that NOVA submitted? To say the least we're leery of giving Craig our inventions due to past problems. Besides, what happened to our catalogs that have been sent down to SJG? Are they in File 13 or somewhere else? NOVA would appreciate some consideration before giving materials to forces unknown. We will, of course, talk to SJG about this.
Recently we got an international correspondence from Ian Knights of England. The Isles received Star Trek: The Next Generation and Twin Peaks. Next Generation is being censored by the BBC and higher ups. Isn't that a twist? In the letter Ian informed us of the latest Formula I season using the Ayrton Senna principle of
"If you can't get around them, go through them". Sounds like good old Dueltrack.
Ian will have a story published in ADQ 8-4 and is working on the England Road Atlas. In his latest letter he sent a drag race scenario called the 1/4 Mile Burn. It is complete and comes with three fully-equipped teams. He listed 1/4 of a mile as 88 gaming inches, which is fine if you go by reality but it is actually 90 inches. We are seriously thinking about sending him a copy of "The Fast Lane" which I'm sure he'll enjoy.
Several issues back we told that the Driving Tigers were putting together a fanzine. Well its now coming to pass and it's called The Driving Tigers Magazine. The price is $2.50 per issue or $10 for a subscription. Fiction can be between 500 to 10,000 words in length. Writer guidelines are available, just send a SASE to them. The magazine contains autoduelling fiction among other things. NOVA sends its congratulations to the Driving Tigers and hope that they have a long publishing career.
CLOSING FIRE
Does anyone have a large, fast cargo plane? Santa was in dire straits until he approached NOVA for help. I just wondered where he got that magic dust. Next issue will bring more insanity from the Midwest. Updates on the ASP War and on NOVA anti-terrorists efforts continue to come in. Regular features round out the list as we head for our seventh anniversary.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hope you fired your weapons in an uninhabited area. Nothing worse than metal rain!
Drive offensively! I'm not going to fly with that flying fatman anymore!
