NIGHTMESSENGER

NOVA's Quarterly Newsletter

Vol. 3, No. 2, Summer 2039

OPENING FIRE

Hot time in the summer. Now's the time when the duelling becomes fast and wild. Time to get crazy.

NOVA will be participating in the New Omaha/Council Bluffs Duelling Circuit called The Survival Circuit later this summer, and it is sure to be a blowout. We just finished the 2039 World Record article and are working on the second Midwest Encounter Guide, which is due to be completed in August or September.

A lot of things are happening around the New Omaha area recently. With the sudden appearance of the vigilante force called Death (not the Texas AADA group) which is as mysterious as its name. Also there has been the devious workings of the Three Maniacs and a Grenade. Earlier this year a new resort opened southwest of Lincoln. The resort-city's name is Battle, a duelling orientated theme park encompassing some 60 square miles with a city containing several duelling and racing complexes in the center. The vacationing duelling climate in Nebraska is unpredictable. We advise caution.

There have been rumors of a batman appearing around New Omaha. These may be connected with Batman's 100th anniversary. As of yet, nothing's been confirmed.

NOVA WORKS

Here's a couple of items to look for on your next trip to the local Uncle Albert's shop or other duelling-related stores.

In-Flight Refueling/Recharging System:

Refueling Gear $10,000 200 lbs. 2 spaces
Recharging Gear $15,000 200 lbs. 2 spaces
Refueling Tube $2,000 100 lbs. 1 space
Recharging Tube $2,500 100 lbs 1 space

This In-Flight Refueling/Recharging System (IFRS) uses a drogue and tube method of refueling/recharging. The drogue being the refueling/recharging hose with a parachute at the end of it. This is where the refueling/recharging aircraft inserts the tube to get refueled or recharged. Because of high speed pumps/superconductors and power cells, the refueling/recharging time is halved. Both helicopters and microplanes must be in level flight at the time of refueling to help stay connected; any interruption will stop the process immediately.

Mech Armor: $15,000 plus cost of weapons and misc., 6 G.E. Mech armor adds three points of plastic armor and 3 points of metal armor to the wearer. Movement is 1/3 normal. The armor can carry one space of weapons/equipment in each arm and two spaces on the back for further equipment/weapons. The armor comes with a full armor crash helmet. Only indirect fire weapons can be mounted in the back.

Items for use in Mech Armor:

Any one personal weapon can be mounted in t he arms but it will take up the space there.

Any one space vehicular weapons can be mounted in the arms.

Claw: Takes two spaces; one space in the arm and one space in the back for the hydraulics. Can lift 5,000 lbs. $500, does 1D6+1 damage, 3 DP.

Ball & Chain: Take two spaces; one space in the arm and one space in the back to store the chain and the hydraulics needed to pull the ball back in. This item is a long chain that has a large ball at the end of it (4 DP for the ball, 2 DP for the chain). The chain will reach 3" out from the armor and does 2D6 damage, with a to-hit roll of 8. Costs $1,000. There is a -6 penalty to target the ball and a -9 penalty to target the chain.

Notes: Mech Armor-equipped people cannot pilot any vehicle; they can ride in them for 6 spaces and 2,000 lbs., regardless of the items carried by the armor. This armor cannot be worn with any other body armor except a fireproof suit. Mech Armor can be made fireproof for an additional $2,000.

THE WORLD "OUT THERE”

Who is Death? What is their purpose? Recently those questions have come to mind to the people of the Midwest as vigilante-styled attacks have increased. Their (assumed more than one person) calling card is a card adorned with a black skull with crossbones bearing the word Death have been found at the scenes of their attacks. Victims have included cycle gangs, terrorists, and corrupt government officials. We will keep you informed of any new information pertaining to Death.

The Midwest Regional at Name-That-Con 2 was won by Cliff Christiansen of NOVA. As a result of MADD's President Craig Sheeley's attitude and lack of respect (among other things), NOVA has severed all communications with MADD and Craig Sheeley. NOVA recommends avoiding MADD and Craig Sheeley at all costs. The Regional was held on the Sheeley Loop; a loop of non-secured road sections. The only information available before the duel was that it was a "Division 15 Race"; real descriptive. The actual duel was a race from one end of the track to the other with points awarded for crossing the center, finishing, and kills. Some of us brought in pure speed machines and literally flew around the loop at 200 mph plus, only to end up as cannon fodder for the slower duellists. This was the worst-planned regional any of us had ever seen, and we couldn't run anything else. I like standardized championships rather than non-standardized ones, especially for regionals.

Due to recent events the BLUD/NOVA war is back on. We are sure to see more attacks by both sides. Of course in the wings are the Three Maniacs and a Grenade with all the other riff-raff waiting to strike when we are low.

This summer NOVA will be participating in the Survival Circuit, the local duelling circuit lasting for a total of 12 days in 12 arenas. Any duellists who wins the most arenas and survives all of them gets up to $50,000 plus arena winnings. This is by far the toughest circuit in all of North America, and for good reason.

The winds of change have struck again with the release of the Car Wars Compendium. This time the winds are at gale force. All of the variants that appeared in ADQ 7-1's Driver Seat section are now official rules. Some warning, huh?

GAME NEWS

In The Arena

“The Omacon 8.5 Tournament”

The Omacon 8.5 Tournament is the first one-day gaming convention sponsored by Omacon. Like most tournaments, it had two rounds. The final round occurred on February 18, 2039 and was a division 20 in the Aksarben Arena.

There were seven finalists: Cliff Christiansen, Keith Fair, Don Jacques, Alex Lobo, Tim Jacques, Neil Hilton, and Mike Hirtes. Since there was only six gates, one duellist had to start in the middle of the arena. It was Mike who started in the east tunnel. All duellists entered with only three being able to fire upon each other at the start. Keith and Alex fired upon Mike with blast cannons while Mike fired his oil gun in front of Cliff. As Mike's oil burst into flames he was hit by Keith. Don turned to broadside Cliff with a anti-tank gun loaded with sabot ammo while Tim turned on Alex. Mike broke Keith's line of sight by ducking around one of the TV towers and jumps. Keith picked Neil as his next target. Meanwhile Mike raced around while Neil shot at Keith. Keith then pivoted to attack Mike who at this time shot oil in front of Keith and then sped towards him. Don fired at Cliff again, breaching the armor but hitting the other side. Mike performed the first ram by nailing Keith; both died in the process. Cliff drove his van behind an obstacle to get out of Don's sights. Alex drove around an obstacle to get Cliff. Tim fired on Don and Neil fired upon Tim.

Cliff and Alex approached each other with Alex firing away. Tim turned to face a new opponent as Don moved out of sight. The second ram happened as Cliff totally destroyed Alex's car at the west end of the arena. Tim and Don chased Neil towards the east side as Cliff built up speed. Neil dodged around an obstacle as Don and Tim shot each other.

Cliff went after Neil by blocking a passage with flaming oil, then got his second ram kill by nailing Neil. Cliff then blockaded himself in a side passage with flaming oil and faced front into a tunnel. After several turns of stalemate, Don started firing upon Tim again. After a few more turns Tim was killed. The event ended with Cliff coming in first with two kills, Don in second with one, and Tim was third.

"Triple Death Arena"

The grand opening of the Triple Death Arena, located in Battle, Nebraska, occurred on June 10, 2039. However, the only level open that day was the third. The arena was a division 5 with only three participants: Psycho, DJ Battle, and Dooley. The first surprise was a small light-weight glider entering from DJ Battle's entrance tunnel. Dooley immediately opened fire on it, hitting the wing, but doing no damage. At the same time, Psycho was accelerating towards the jumps in the middle of the arena.

During the second round of combat the glider fired a barrage of three mini-rockets at the top of Dooley's car. One hit, doing minimal damage. Dooley returned fire at the wing again with a MFR. A few rockets hit and the wing bent slightly, putting stress on the fuselage. Psycho was still heading towards the jumps.

The third round of combat saw two of the three combatants knocked out of action. DJ was having a hard time controlling the glider. While flying over Dooley's car the landing gear was clipped off. The hazard caused the bent wing to rip off; the glider lost control and slammed into a wall. Just as this happened DJ dropped three bombs on Dooley's car, vaporizing it outright. DJ survived the crash only to be fired upon by the arena defenses for damaging the wall. Two ED 209s turned the wrecked glider into more wreckage and DJ became tomato paste. Psycho was the only driver left alive. He sustained no damage and due to the circumstances didn't fire a shot; he took first place.

On The Road

"Floodaid '38 Convoy"

In the Fall of 2038 a large storm moved over Salt Lake City and flooded it. A convoy was put together to transport flood relief supplies and equipment to Salt Lake. The supplies also included a MMSD for the Salt Lake based Gold Cross facility. Six custom $200,000 rigs were used to carry the supplies. The known personalities involved were Dippy, Steelfist, Dr. Duc, Terror, and Randy "Nuke'em" Davies.

The convoy left early in the morning from New Omaha. The trip was quiet on I-80 until it got near Cheyanne, Nebraska. 70 miles east of the city a station wagon attacked the convoy, doing minor damage while being easily and quickly destroyed. At the truck stop in Cheyanne the crew had dinner. A cat burglar attempted to break into the parked rigs but Randy Davies spotted the thief. Davies got into his rig and activated his hypersound system; the thief was knocked out cold.

The NOVA crew interrogated the now deafened cat burglar. By use of Steelfist's claw they got all the information they needed. The thief was after the MMSD. Dippy handed the thief a joint disguised as a cigarette who then promptly lit it up. After doing so the group handed over the now-stoned thief to the local police.

Just as the convoy was pulling out of the truck stop a vicious fire-fight broke out between two autoduellists. The fight occurred after some idiot threw a rock wrapped in a $100 dollar bill at a car guarded by a anti-theft system. The resulting flechette explosion damaged the other duellists' car, causing the fire-fight.

Between Laramie and Rowlins, Wyoming, the convoy was attacked by the Throttle Jockeys. All vehicles in the gang were powered by jet engined-equipped trikes. The convoy spit fire and carnage. Leaving behind the now-destroyed gang, the convoy was forced to make a detour due to a washed out bridge. The detour caused the convoy to go south to Highway 40. About 40 miles east of Vernal two local boats attacked the convoy. The convoy returned fire and the attacking boats were obliterated. Dippy's rig lost some tires; the others sustained light damage.

Just before arriving in Salt Lake City four helicopters and a bus asked for the MMSD, but Terror refused. The helicopters opened fired on Terror's cab. The front armor failed under this onslaught. Terror release the trailer just as the power plant was trashed and the remaining bullets killed him. The convoy quickly destroyed the helicopters and the bus with Dr. Duc taking down two of the copters himself. Other than Terror, the convoy had little damage done to it.

The convoy continued to Salt Lake City and arrived on time with no further problems. Only Terror's rig was destroyed. The trailer containing the MMSD was hauled in by a cab called in from Salt Lake. The group found out later that a rival cloning company was behind all the attacks. Gold Cross made no comment if it would make any retaliatory action.

MURPHY'S CORNER

One error in the last issue is that the "In The Arena" section should've had the title of the 2036 Club Championship. A small error but enough to be noticed.

LOCAL HERO

DJ "Nugget" Battle by Donald "Terror" Viner

Nightmessenger (NM): When and where were you born?

DJ Battle (DJ): I was born in Fort Hood, Texas on February 5, 2016. My mother was a sergeant in the army, and my father was a gunship pilot in the army air support.

NM: When did you move to New Omaha?

DJ: Shortly after the Food Riots in which my father was killed when he volunteered for the military's riot control squad. He died in the line of duty.

NM: What kind of education did you receive in New Omaha?

DJ: Well, in the lower grades I got mostly A's or B's, and in high school I got straight A's. In high school I tended to show an interest in electronics but I ended up choosing robotics as my career. In college I took mostly robotic, electronics, and computer courses along with technician classes. I graduated in '37 with degrees in electronics, computers, and robotics and finished in the upper 10% of the graduating class.

NM: How did you start in autoduelling?

DJ: I got into duelling when I saw many of my college friends get into it. It was something more like peer pressure than really wanting to join, but now that I'm here, I really love it and wouldn't give it up for the world. To hell with the Iowa Motor Safety Association and EDSEL; autoduelling is here to stay, whether they like it or not.

NM: What has been your most exciting moment in autoduelling?

DJ: The first monster truck arena I entered. I brought in a monster tank, made a good three kills and became a confirmed ace. Unfortunately, another duellist had the same vehicle I did, and even if we went nose to nose and used all of our ammunition and started ramming each other we wouldn't get through the armor. So we declared a tie and that was that.

NM: How did you start Far Designs Industries?

DJ: Far Designs Industries was started with a, ah, bank loan. Not too many people know about this, but I have already paid the loan of through arena winnings.

NM: What exactly is it that Far Designs produce?

DJ: It produces mostly electronics equipment, computers, and robotic equipment, although we do a little research with concept cars. The concept cars division is becoming one of the larger areas of study now that we hold not only the world speed record for a car, but we also hold the air speed record. So we're pretty well off.

NM: Rumor has it that you own the resort opening up outside of Lincoln. Would you comment on that?

DJ: Yes, I do own the resort, or at least my corporation does, after they acquired it through the lawsuit against Defense Systems International.

NM: How is the resort going then?

DJ: Well, we have most of the city itself built, the arena section is almost completed, the dragstrips are under construction, the underground parking lot is finished, as is the entrance parking lot, the hotel/lake areas are nearing completion, and the ExplorationLand and YesterYear sections are finished also. All and all, I'd say construction is going well and everything we have planned out so far should be completed by 2042. By 2045 Battle should be the leading competitor of Los Disneys.

DJ's duelling statistics are notable. Although he does not consider himself a professional duellist his stats say otherwise. As of his last arena his statistics stood as follows.

Year of Entry: 2039

Duels: 14 -- 2 1st, 7 2nd, 3 3rd, 2 ties.

Winning Percentage: .923

Target Hit Average: .932 w/104 shots and 97 hits.

Combatants Killed Average: .777 w/12 vehicle kills and 6 pedestrian (arena) kills.

DJ is a triple ace with 12 confirmed kills in arenas and 4 on roads. His combat skills are Driver +2, Gunner +3, Handgunner +2, and Running +1. Most important non-combat skills are Computer Technician +3, Electronics +3, Electronics Technicians +3, Computers +4, and Robotics +4.

DJ usually carries an AV-ammo loaded assault rifle with an under-rifle grenade launcher and various impact detonated grenades. His vehicular weaponry is mixed. He may use blast cannons with HESH one day and a ATG with APFSDS ammo the next.

His typical division 30 arena vehicle would be something similar to the Nugget CD (Camper Deluxe).

Nugget CD: Camper, x-hvy. chassis, hvy. suspension, super power plant, six solid tires, driver, two linked blast cannons front w/HESH ammo, SWC, fire extinguisher. Armor: F45, L44, R44, B44, T1, U1. Accel. 5, top speed 90, HC 2; 7,800 lbs., $29,990.

NUTS AND BOLTS

Steve Jackson Games has been doing something very wrong lately. Actually, they've been doing something quite stupid. Let us discuss the many things that SJG has been doing recently.

The Arena Book was very well done, but then they do The L'Outrance book, which was sloppy. Seems to me when they get something right the first time they have to get it wrong for the second. Evidently they're not learning from experience.

After putting out supplements that require blank map sheets to use what do you think they do next? They quit producing the blank map sheets. Now this takes smarts. How do you expect to use the supplements when you don't have any map sheets to draw them on?

Then SJG takes several old supplements out of production. For instance, the Deluxe Wheelie, the Double Arena, Off Road, and Chopper Challenge. Personally, this doesn't bother me because I've got all of the above and who knows, maybe they'll end up like the first two years of ADQ: rare and valuable. What about the player who doesn't want to pay a sum of money for the Compendium, but instead wants the pocket box and expand from there using the supplements? Anyway, the Deluxe Wheelie was a good way of getting a large sum of vehicle and obstacle markers.

Then comes the Compendium. I've been playing Car Wars for a little over four years now and because of the drastic changes I must now redesign perhaps half of my vehicles. Stupid changes. Gas engines get it in the shorts with the increased weights.

Spoilers and airdams; don't get me started. Sorry Oines, they were as close to reality as you can get the old way. If the old and new rules were mixed it would be even better. Spoilers and airdams are used on cars to push them lower to the ground, increasing handling capability and enabling better turning at high speeds and reducing the likelihood of crashes at high speeds. As it is, spoilers and airdams can't really be used separately for a high-speed vehicles because since they do push a car closer to the ground one of your ends is going to be in the air if you don't have both.

Well, SJG sure doesn't know what it's doing.

CLOSING FIRE

Next issue will be our tenth and will feature one or two special sections celebrating that fact. The Omacon 9 Tournament and the Survival Circuit will get top billing in NM3-3, plus our regular features. The 2039 NOVA Works Catalog is available at $8.00 a copy (includes mailing cost) with 93 pages of new inventions. Anyone interested in getting a copy, please contact NOVA.

We are presently working on the Midwest Encounter Guide II. It will be ready in August or September. A book of new vehicles types such as monster trucks, big buses, etc., will also be out soon although a name has not been decided upon. Also, we should be along with our first arena guide featuring the New Omaha area.

Since miniatures play a big part of a regular gaming sessions at NOVA, we will have a special section on them next issue.

Sorry, no Return Fire section this issue, due to the lack of mail (but not without trying). So much for this issue, see you next time around.

Drive, Fly, Pilot and Boat Offensively!
