OPENING FIRE
Because of the lateness of this issue, it will be somewhat foreshortened. Next issue will return to its full size. We in NOVA are preparing for our annual pilgrimage to Gen Con, and the map opera known as the World Dueling Championships. We will have a full report on the road trip, the 'Con and the WDC in our next episode. Stay tuned. In local matters, the Neo-ASPs and BLUR are at it again, causing all kinds of trouble for local law enforcement and keeping the King Cobra and the Mongoose busy.
NOVA WORKS
"The sounds of destruction"
Sometimes it takes someone else to think of something else before someone else thinks of something else (try saying that five times fast). The weapon wizards in our shops are at it again; enjoy the results.
Sonic Mine: CPS: $350, WPS: 5. This mine does 4d6 damage to the underbody and 2d6 damage to all tires within 1" of the mine counter. From 1"-2", the damage is 2d6 (to the side armor only; no damage to the underbody). From 2" - 3", damage is ld6 only (as above). No damage is inflicted beyond 3".
Heavy Sonic Mine: CPS: $500, WPS: 10. A heavy
sonic mine does 6d6 to the underbody and 3d6 to all tires within 1" of
the mine counter. Damage is lessened by distance as with a sonic mine.
HSMs are military-issue only.
Sonic mines are fired from standard
minedroppers, while HSMs are fired from the heavy minedropper. Both types
are non-rechargeable; they may use proximity fuzes and command detonation.
The effects are equal to being hit by sonic cannon fire.
Sonic Grenade:
CPS: $200, WPS: 4 (5 for AGL version), 1 G.E. for thrown version.
A sonic grenade does 2d6 to all
targets within a ½" radius, and ld6 within a 2" radius. No damage
is done beyond 2". As with sonic mines, sonic grenades are non-rechargeable.
Sonic Discharger: CPS: $200, Weight: 5 lbs.
Sonic dischargers are treated
as if they were sonic grenades, except that they only do 1d6 damage to
the side armor of the vehicle that carries them.
Pyrophoric Oil Discharger (POD): $250, 5 lbs.
This item creates a standard
½" x 1" slick of pyrophoric oil, with
normal effects.
Upgraded Supercharger Capacitors (USC): $1,000,
100 lbs, 1 space; adds 1 DP to power plant.
Each USC will increase the acceleration
of a vehicle with an electric power plant by 5 mph and add 20 mph to top
speed. The effects last for five turns. It takes a firing action to activate
a USC. USCs have to be recharged after use; it takes three minutes and
costs $15. Triggering a USC inflicts 1/3 of the plant's total DP in damage,
but will not cause a hazard or fire when triggered. Up to three USCs may
be linked together for cumulative results.
THE WORLD "OUT THERE"
After the updates on our
old membership in the last issue, we got an e-mail
from Daniel Sloan ofOrlando, Florida. The substance of the message was
that he's returning to the game after a few years.
Daniel was president of Gamemasters (AKA: NOVA
South). His handle was Dragonmazer. We'll be meeting him at Gen Con and
discussing some old business.
Another old member
who has crept back
into the limelight is Chris French. He now resides in Oregon, and
has posted several articles and arenas in CWIN. As far as we know, he is
still somewhat ill-disposed towards us.
Preparations for the World Dueling
Championships continue apace. We have done much design work for
the meat-grinder preliminary rounds. Yet again, the structure of the Worlds
fails to make sense. We'll see who survives the
madness this year. Perhaps we'll go insane just to save time ...
Mike Owen's debate board is livelier
than ever, with a message count approaching the 9,000 mark!! At
times, the discussions have been fast and furious (but
have never gotten out of hand). Topics on the board show much
variation, which is
good.
BLUR and the Neo-ASPs
continue to fill the news with their misdeeds. The FB1 and the Nebraska
State Police have formed a joint task force
in order to make things more difficult for our socially maladjusted
friends. It is to he
hoped that they succeed before too many wrecked vehicles start piling up.
The newest Car
Wars item from SJG is that
there is to be a
re-release of the card game.
We
also have no information
on the new streamlined version of Car Wars. The card game is due out in
August, most likely at Gen Con.
NOVA projects (there has been
little progress of late) include NOVA Works: 2051 Catalog Update and
our much talked-about flag. We're still on the prowl for a new headquarters.Any
progress we make in this regard will be
posted in the Nightmessenger
and other places for those interested. We'd also like to increase our
membership so that we can have some decent-sized duels.
Bill the Cat was re-elected Mayor
of New in a close race with Boris Static. When the votes were counted
and recounted, there was only a few hundred votes difference between the
two candidates. The election saw
dirty tricks and smear tactics on both sides. Both candidates raised
allegations of vote fraud by the other side. At
times, their respective supporters almost came
to blows.
For the first time in ten years,
there will not be a World Racing Championship. This is due to a lack of
a sponsoring chapter
(no duelmaster). SJG and
CADC also had some disagreement over a number of issues.
I have offered to run the WRC next year, as I
have three championships (one WDC, two WRC) under my belt.

THE 10 O'CLOCK NEWS
May 1, 2051: The FBI sent out a national warning concerning the activities of BLUR. This organization has given law enforcement authorities a massive headache with its deathraces and cannonball runs.
May 4, 2051: A deathrace began in Norfolk, Virginia. This event involved some thirty vehicles overall and caused some two hundred casualties before the racers stopped in St. Louis, Missouri for the night.
May 5, 2051: The Missouri National Guard destroyed some twenty deathracers, but at least ten are still at large. The remaining racers caused several hundred more casualties before disappearing near Denver, Colorado.
May 6, 2051: The Colorado National Guard destroyed six more deathracers before they left the state today. Only filly civilian casualties were caused by the remaining racers. Law-enforcement authorities lost track of them again when they split up in the Deseret region.
May 7, 2051: The FBI declared victory over BLUR after last weekend's deathrace. They thanked everyone involved in the operation against BLUR
May 8, 2051: Bill the Cat was re-elected mayor of New Omaha in a very tight race against Boris Static. After several recounts, the margin of victory was found to be only a few hundred votes. The campaign got bloody about a month ago, with smear tactics and dirty tricks on both sides. Bill the Cat's only comment was "Aack, Oop, Thbppt".
May 10, 2051: A Los Angeles TV station received a holocube from BLUR today. The cube contained the highlights of the recent deathrace, including the awards ceremony. The cube was turned over to the FBI for investigation.
June 1, 2051: BLUR started two cannonball runs at 5:00 AM local time; one in New York City and the other in Los Angeles. A few hours later, the FBI put out an all-points bulletin to alert state police agencies along the suspected routes of the races. The New York cannonballers made it to St. Louis, Missouri later in the day, while the Los Angeles cannonballers made it to Denver, Colorado. Numerous wrecks were caused along the way on both sides.
June 2, 2051: The Midwest suffered again from the cannonballers as they went in opposite directions. Dozens of wrecks were caused throughout Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. It is not known if law enforcement authorities caught any of the racers involved.
June 3, 2051: The cannonballers
kept law-enforcement authorities busy on both coasts while causing numerous
wrecks. California state police chased some of the New York contingent,
but they managed to escape. The FBI had no comment about the lack of arrests
NUTS & BOLTS
Tournament Scoring
Another much-debated topic
for tournaments, along with the question of stock vs. custom designs. Some
duelmasters prefer to do it the hard way, no matter what. I'm not one of
them. I learned years ago the rights and wrongs of tournament scoring.
Scoring can be done hard or easy; the choice is yours as duelmaster. The
important thing to remember is not to let a committee
dictate terms to you.
When scoring, you must ask yourself
"What am I scoring?" Dueling or driving ability? What
is more important, getting kills or "give me" points? Tournaments can be
ruled and regulated to death, but this doesn't make it any more fun for
the participants.
The best thing to remember is
the KISS principle. Don't make the scoring system so complex that someone
needs a high math score to figure it out. The simplest scoring systems
are 1) kills and 2) survivor. Scoring by kills
means that the duellists with the most kills advances to the next
round. Scoring by survivor means that the last
one or two duelists whose vehicles are able to move advance. Admittedly
a very "niche" way of running a tournament, but very effective nonetheless.
Some duelmasters love to create
points for anything and everything in a duel. Shooting targets, grabbing
a ring, crossing checkpoints are just a few examples.
I know from experience, as I did the same thing years ago. Yes, there are
loads of chances to score, but what about killing the other duelists? Isn't
that the whole object of the game? Too many points
create too many places to lose focus. The
main thing is to have fun and remember that it's only a game.
I could go on and
on about how to run a tournament. In fact,
I have written a number of articles on this very
subject for the NOVA website. Sometimes, I get a little high-brow on the
subject (this is to be expected from a person who's mind is always on the
go).
Carbon-Aluminum Frames Revisited
Years ago at a World Championship,
a duelmaster pounded it into my head that you add the base cost of the
chassis back in after the costs are figured for the CA frame. This adds
even more to the costs involved, As it stands, CA frames cost 400% of normal.
The bucks really start to add up when the costs for chassis and suspension
modifications for CA-framed vehicles are added in. You can add a good $10,000
to the cost of a sedan or luxury, before such minor things like armor and
weapons are considered. There is also the problem of ram-happy drivers
to he considered. One good shot from one of these and your pretty, expensive
CA-framed vehicle will get crumpled like a piece of paper.
A CA frame can solve a number
of problems, but cost isn't one of them. That nameless duelmaster was completely
wrong on the cost figures for CA frames. This
isn't the first time some bubbleheaded duelmaster
or player has led me astray. I can only vow to do better in the future.

CUBE LOGS
Junkyard Wars
This series is a British import now showing on TLC.
It sets two teams against each other, each team having the contents of
a junkyard and a certain amount of time to accomplish their missions. These
include building various types of vehicles and doing different things with
them. The vehicles are as varied as dragsters and hovercraft, cannons and
catapults. The teams are international, coming from both Europe and America.
A good show to watch.****
Battlebots
This Comedy central show pits two remote-controlled
robots against each other. The idea is that only one rolls away. Two robots
in the same weight class fight it out in an arena called the Battlebox.
To complicate matters, the Battlebox has hazards to make it difficult for
the robots as they fight. These are buzzsaws that pop up from the floor,
spikes that spring up with no warning and an item called the Pulverizer
(a very, large hammer). There are some great battles, with varying robot
designs. There are the bricks, the slammers and the rams; some robots are
also fitted with weapons like saws, claws, hammers and axes.
The Season 3.0 broadcasts began
on July 10, and have already seen some spectacular
fights. The Battlebox has been refitted with new hazards; the old hazards
have more powerful motors, making them even more dangerous. * * * **
Robotica
This is TLC's entry into the Robot Wars concept.
It has a figure-eight race track and a maze with varying hazards. Those
'bots that advance go to a raised arena that looks like
something out of a Mad Max movie. Robotica has an interesting MC and scoring.
It is somewhat more refined than Battlebots. Watch it on tape.***
Fortress 2: Re-Entry
Christopher Lambert is John Brennick, who is caught
again by the Men-Tel Corporation and sent to prison in space. Again, he
must do the impossible and escape. This straight-to-video gem was filmed
in Luxembourg, along with Wing Commander (another "winning" movie). It
takes place ten years after the first movie, but other than that has no
integration at all. Rent it if you're really, really bored.*
Inframan
After a 1,000-year sleep, Princess Dragon Mom (Terry
Liu) awakens to conquer the Earth with a series of disasters. Professor
Chang (Wang Hsieh) is charged with stopping the Princess' mad plans. He
has a person who volunteers to become the cyborg
hero Inframan. With an army of skeletal warriors and eight other monsters,
the fight is on.
This cheesy sci-fi classic was
found in the unfathomed depths of the bargain video rack at K-Mart. It
is incredibly silly,
having come from Taiwan in the mid-l970's,
if ever a movie deserved to get the whole nine yards from MST3K, this one
is it.*
Highlander: Endgame
The fourth Highlander film. It is wondered by many
why any of the others were made. The first one ( 'Highlander, 1985) was
great. The other three
were worse than terrible. Connor McCleod
(Christopher Lambert) and Duncan McCleod (Adrian Paul) re-unite to fight
against some evil immortals (are there any left, we wonder?). This movie's
only redeeming characteristic is that it totally ignores the first two
sequels. Rent it if you dare, as it is a true bomb in all respects. *
The 6th Day
Adam Gibson (Arnold S.)
Is a charter pilot in the near future who comes
home one day to find himself already there.
In this future timeline,
cloning is an everyday thing for animals (but not humans). Now, he's a
clone and he wants "his" life
back. As is usual with the big A's films, there is a huge amount of gratuitous
violence and property damage. The film does raise some interesting
questions about cloning, however. **
Battlefield: Earth
It is the year 3000 AD, and the world has been ruled
by the alien Psychlos for 1,000 years. The hero
Jonnie leads a bunch of rebel humans against the Psychlos leader Terl (John
Travolta). Who will win? Well, I won't give away the ending. This movie
is best if it is
unwatched. If you rent it, don't
take it seriously. Remember, this is L. Ron Hubbard we're talking about,
the man who wrote novels while taking a dirt
nap six feet under. We are forced to wonder where MTS3K is when we REALLY
need them.
If you have a couple of hours
to kill (along with the spare gray matter to waste), rent this movie. Rumors
have it that Travolta is funding Battlefield:
Earth 2. It is sincerely hoped that they are false.
RPM
This movie is about a prototype gasless car. David
Arquette and Famke Janssen play Luke Delson
and Claudia, a pair of professional car thieves who go after a number of
rare cars at an auto show in Nice, France. All along, their target is the
RPM. This film is a European attempt at crossing
Gone in 60 Seconds and Black Moon Rising. It
is an OK film for a rainy afternoon.**
Driven
Joe Tanto (Sylvester Stallone) is a veteran driver
brought back to help a rookie driver win the
World Racing Car season (Formula 1, sort of).
This isn't Rocky. at the Race Track;. it is more like Days of Thunder goes
F-1. The plot is OK, but the effects are overboard and ignore the locations.
This film is OK if you're a racing fan.**
RETURN FIRE
It came from the Web (again)
I thought anyone visiting our website would know
that Car Wars is a game, not reality. Yet, there are those out there that
just don't get it. Then there are those that
do.

I have just been perusing a few articles in the "Nightmessenger"
(12-4). You make a faulty calculation in the price of a vehicle w4th a
Carbon-Aluminum (CA) frame. The roles state it "quadruples body cost and
halves body weight". You claim "Carbon-Aluminum
frames add an additional 400% to the body cost, meaning that a luxury
with a CA frame would cost $4,000 (not $3,200)". In fact it was meant to
be read by your interpretation it would read "costs 400% of body cost".
Since the inception of the Interact
Duelling League (IDL), I have become very involved in the world of Car
Wars again. The IDL hosts live, via the Internet duels, with combatants
from all
across the US, France, England, Australia
(and the Free Off States).
This
has exposed me to rules
interpretations I have never dreamed of, as the Car Wars rules are poorly-written
and interpreted differently across the globe.
I have been on a one-man crusade
to try to level the playing field somewhat, and
that is what has drawn me to your newsletter.
As a third topic in this
single e-,mail I have noticed
a lack of NOVA duelists
signed up with the IDL. Perhaps
NOVA members have not yet heard of the IDL, where AADA stars John Blaylock
(World Dueling Champion) and Keith Schercr
(World Racing Champion) hone their dueling skills.
Or, maybe NOVA members all live in a computer
void, without weekend access to the digital world that those of us who
no longer live in caves :-) The big theory, of course, is that NOVA duelists
cannot handle international competition. That Mike Garrity's '49 dueling
championship was a fluke, and he was sent packing in 2050 when real duelists
showed (spiked body armor gauntlet thrown down here).
Seriously, we would like to see one or more NOVA
duelists in the IDL. The typical duel lasts the better part of a day, but
we are making improvements all the time to speed things up. Cheek us out!
This is a rare personal invite (the first sent to a club).

The 5-Second Challenge
A recent thread on Mike Owen's debate board challenged designers to come up with a vehicle that could go as fast as possible. The only stricture was that said vehicle had to do it in five seconds.
Topper III: Streamlined top-fuel dragster,
x-hvy chassis, 450-CI gas engine w/blueprinting & tubular headers,
VP turbocharger, supercharger & 5-gallon duelling tank, 4 PR racing
slicks, driver, 1 tank nitrous oxide, drag chute (B), spoiler & airdam,
4 EWPs (1 R, 1 L, 1 B, 1 T) w/200 lbs of rocket booster in each, 4 EWP
ejectors, weapon links (EWPs, NOX, RBs), Armor: F6, B6, R6, L6, T1, U1.
Acceleration: 25 (35 w/NOX, 75 w/NOX & RBs), HC: 7 (8 at 60 mph+),
Top Speed: 200 mph (300 mph w/NOX), plus rocket boosters (160 mph additional),
4,794 lbs, $61,706.
In five seconds, the Topper III
can get to 335 mph; 4 seconds at 75 mph acceleration and the fifth second
at 35 mph acceleration. It will do the quarter mile in 4.5 seconds.
Warp One J-2: Luxury w/CA frame, x-hvy chassis,
hvy suspension, thundercat power plant w/PCs & SCs, 3 ISCs, 4 HDHTMs,
4 PR racing slicks, driver, G-suit, overdrive, 6 spaces of rocket boosters
back, spoiler & airdam, 4 EWPs (1R, 1L, 1T, 1B) w/200 lbs of rocket
boosters each, 4 EWP ejectors, links (ISCs, HDHTMs, RBs, & EWPs), weapons
timer (ISCs, HDHTMs, RBs, & EWPs), Armor: F7, R7, L7, B7, T1, U2, Acceleration:
15 (30 w/ISCs or HDHTMs, 45 w/ISCs & HDHTMs, 85 w/ISCs & HDHTMs
& RBs, 40 w/RBs alone), HC: 5 (6 at 60 mph+), Top Speed 195 mph plus
overdrive and rocket boosters (245 mph), 6595 lbs, $55,820.
Like the Topper III, the Warp
One J-2 can get to 335 mph in five seconds. It can accelerate by 85 mph
per second for 3 seconds, and 40 mph for 2 seconds. The end result is the
same, a quarter-mile in 4.5 seconds.
Space Shot: Van w/CA frame, x-hvy chassis,
hvy suspension, blueprinted 500-CI gas engine w/tubular headers, VP turbocharger,
supercharger & 5-gallon dueling tank, 4 HD racing slicks, driver, HI)
shocks, HD brakes, anti-lock braking system, active suspension, 1 tank
nitrous oxide, 10 spaces rocket booster (B), Armor: F10, B10, R10, L10,
T10, U10. Acceleration: 25 (35 w/nitrous), HC: 5, Top Speed: 185 mph (277.5
mph w/nitrous), 4,980 lbs, $63,500.
The Space Shot can get to 375
mph in five seconds. The rocket boosters are set to burn 200 lbs of fuel
per second, which gives an extra 40 mph of acceleration per turn for five
turns. The maximum theoretical top speed of this vehicle is 477.5 mph.
Electric Rocket: Van w/CA frame, x-hvy chassis,
hvy suspension, thundercat power plant, 6 HD racing slicks, driver, HD
shocks, HD brakes, anti-lock braking system, active suspension, 2 ISCs,
HDHTMs, DO-space rocket booster (B), no armor. Acceleration: 15 (30 w/
HDHTMs), HC: 5, Top Speed: 220 mph (145 mph w/ HDHTMs), 4,910 lbs, $43,600.
Like the Space Shot, the Electric
Rocket can accelerate to 375 mph in five seconds (don't expect it to have
much of a power plant afterwards). The ER's maximum theoretical top speed
is 460 mph.
CLOSING FIRE
The end is near! The end is near! Whoops, it's only
the end of the issue. With that, we close out yet another chapter in our
on-going saga. In our next issue, we'll cover the Duelling Worlds, the
road trip to Gen Con and of course, the Road Kill count. Perhaps the powers
that be at WOTC can improve on the way things were done last year.
We will return next issue with
our regular features and regular size too. Until next time, enjoy the Summer,
watch out for tailgaters and of course:

What do you mean Blast fighter 45? There's only 43 of them, so far. I guess this means we go back to the drawing board.- Blaster Motors CEO
