Bill Hickok Memorial Arena
Deadwood, South Dakota
By Norman McMullen

Opened recently by the Midnight Star Hotel and Casino, the Bill Hickok Memorial Arena is set to bring in more dueling-related business for Deadwood. Tourism is on the rise in the Black Hills, and the town of Deadwood wants to cash in on it. Sitting in the shadows of Mount Rushmore and Sitting Bull, Deadwood is popularly known as the place where the gunfighter 'Wild Bill' Hickok was shot dead during a poker game. The town council and Midnight Star decided to name the new arena for this legend of the Old West. Betting on duels is permitted, either at the arena or on the Midnight Star's betting floor.

Deadman's Duel (Eights & Aces) - held on Hickok's birthday (May 27) and date of death (August 2). The duelists enter the arena with one (ace) or eight weapons (this includes dischargers). Some duelists view this event as bad luck due to it's association with Hickok's death.

Gunslinger - Two duelists enter the arena with front-mounted direct-fire weapons. Concealed and dropped weapons are forbidden from this event. Similar to challenge night, this event is more serious. In August, Gunslinger of the Year is given to the duelist with the most Gunslinger wins.
