Description Looking like yellow anthropomorphic grasshoppers, the Bhohim were a contented race. Not driven by an instinctual will as typified by a hive mind race, the Bhohim were comfortable being ruled by a select set of individuals. Called the Enclave, the oligarchal ruling council ran a society based on the generation of wealth. Eventually, it was decided that since the homeworld was fully exploited, it was time to move into space. The existence of warp points was discovered after a decade of data accumulation and analysis of a gravitational anomaly in the Bhohim outer system. Warp point exploration and system surveys soon followed. By the time the Enclave encountered the Fendalens no less than twelve systems lay under their control, making them the largest opponent for the Fendalens before they encountered the Terpla'ns years later. Initially, the Bhohim were quite eager to have a trade treaty with the Fendalen Kingdom. But somehow during the negotiations the Bhohim ambassador insulted his Fendalen counterpart. King Kysjyt demanded a 'battle of honor' with the Bhohim so that the insult could be removed. The battle was held, and the Bhohim won. This didn't sit well with Kysjyt, leaving him wanting an excuse to declare war. It came in the form of a Bhohim survey squadron that entered a Fendalen system via a closed warp point. With previously sent secret orders from the King, the Fendalen system commander considered the survey squadron to be 'raiders' and attacked. The oligarchs sent a protest letter to the Fendalen ambassador upon hearing the news. What surprise they felt when the ambassador in turn presented his own letter. Fendalen ships had not only attacked the survey squadron but followed the survivors to their entry warp point, laying claim to the system on the far side. Clearly this was too much for the Bhohim, for the system had two habitable planets with Bhohim colonies on them. The war declaration was delivered shortly thereafter. For the first fourteen months the war went very well for the Bhohim. King Kysjyt's frontier fleet was less technically sophisticated than that of the home fleet and suffered accordingly. Though they had struck further into the Fendalen sphere than the opposite, the Bhohim wanted Kysjyt to come to the peace table. Always wanting to have things on his own terms, King Kysjyt waited until enough heavy units equipped with the recently developed x-ray laser became available. Bhohim ships were observed to have a low ratio of armor to shield protection, so the new laser weapon came as a complete surprise. Given the speed and intensity of Fendalen operations the Bhohim sued for peace after five of their systems were conquered. King Kysjyt settled on having the five systems as his price for peace, and in turn gave the oligarchs the trade treaty they wanted. Seeing this as the fastest way to get back to the business of making money, the oligarchs agreed. Over time, the Bhohim came to appreciate the great wealth the Fendalens had and wanted more. With avarice driving them, the Bhohim became partners and then amalgamated with the Fendalens. Two fleets, the Sixth and Seventh Knights Brigades, were formed in the Fendalen navy and were completed manned and operated by Bhohim crews. When the war against the Terpla'ns started decades later Bhohim crews proved to be just as determined and skilled as their Fendalen counterparts. The Enclave Space Security Force (SSF) With no other sentients in their empire the Bhohim developed their fleet as they saw fit. Close range combat would be handled by battlecruisers backed up by a large number of frigates. Long range missile engagements were to be served by the Midbow class of light cruiser. Shielding, unlike armor, could be restored fully after battle, so the SSF made the deliberate decision to emphasis ship protection with shields. While this practice served the SSF well in its first fourteen months against the Royal Fendalen Navy, the introduction of the x-ray laser came as a rude shock. Datalinks were easily destroyed once those lasers burned their way through the relatively weak armor of SSF ships. Retrofitting ships with a 45/55 shield to armor protection ratio was started but few units (roughly 10%) reached the front by the time the war ended. When the Bhohim became partners with the Fendalens all SSF ships and bases were scrapped or converted to RN designs. |
