Description: The Ahlon originated from a super-terrestoid world and their body form reflects this fact. A typical Ahlon is four meters long and has eight short thick legs. Two arms, each with a three digit hand, are at the front of the body. Also at the front are four eyes and an oval shaped mouth, forming the head. With no real need to wear clothing except in truly hostile environments, an Ahlon will most often carry a satchel laden with notebooks and manuals, mockingly referred to by some races as 'the Ahlon business dress'. While not a true herd race, the Ahlon are quite gregarious and this is reflected by their government. No decision is made unless it has passed at least two levels of bureaucracy. Decisions are slow in the making, though once made they are carried through to their logical end. Typical of this decision making process, the Ahlon had fully colonized their home system before venturing out in their first warp point exploration. Only two systems were explored before the race encountered a survey flotilla of the Gander Confederation. Aside from the expected bureaucratic hold-up and departmental fighting in the Ahlon government, the two races entered into a trade treaty and eventually a trade and military alliance. Relations were cordial, but given the tech differences (the Ahlon were, at the time, TL 6 while the Gander were at TL 9), the Ahlon felt the need for a stronger military. After discovering the Gander had developed the armed pinnace, the Ahlon Bureau of Space Technical Development was given the task to develop something to counter it. That something turned out to be an adaptation of the typical assault shuttle: the anti-fighter small craft. This came on the heels of achieving a new technical level (TL 7). A fresh round of new ship construction took place, with the new BB/AFSC carrier forming a small but significant portion of the updated Ahlon Space Navy Bureau (ASNB). Capable of operating strikefighters (though with a -1 to initiative rolls), the Ahlon never did so when it was forcibly partnered with the Cazov Navy years later. Ahlon labor unions were just as bureaucratic as their government. Fighter squadrons would create another bureau that would compete for funding and personnel. When gunboats were invented it was done so under the bureau that managed the AFSC squadrons. Thus harmony was maintained, the budget increased, and more paperwork was generated. In short, everyone was happy. Only a few years after creating the AFSC (the Gander had also developed the prototype gunboat at this time) the Ahlon and Gander encountered the Cazov. Quickly finding this new race to be not functioning on all cylinders, especially after it attacked two Gander patrol groups, the two allied races went on the offensive. However, the first heavy probe of the Cazov home system was a disaster. Cazov ships, OWPs, minefields, and buoys easily savaged the leading waves. A week later the Cazov fleet, heavily equipped with carriers, counter-attacked. Twenty-two months after the first battle the Gander home system was conquered and six months after that all other major Gander colonies were occupied as well. The Ahlon knew they couldn't stave off the eventual Cazov assault on their home system, but bureaucratic inertia was such that only after the homeworld space station was destroy that the government sued for peace. The Cazov, also a super-terrestoid race, succumbed to one of its rare bouts of sanity and agreed. Though not occupied on the planetary level, the Ahlon were practically disarmed. The ASNB was allowed to operate only 15 ships, of which only three could be AFSC carriers. A Cazov task force, backed by warp point and orbital bases, formed the true strength of the system security forces. Eventually, reluctantly, the Ahlon became partners with the Cazov, providing a small shipbuilding complex serving the needs of the Cazov fleet. The Dictate elected to establish a hostile environment settlement in the Ahlon system, with its own small shipyard, to build dreadnoughts. A few years later the Fendalens, the Cazovians other and eventual partner, decided that it had enough of its abnormal ally's shenanigans and 'rescued' the Ahlon from the Cazov fleet. The Ahlon Space Navy Bureau (ASNB) In combat with the Cazov, the ASNB always sought to close head-on, allowing the spinal lasers to fire to full effect. When the tractor beams came into range, an enemy ship would be selected and tractored. Primary beams, working from targeting data provided by the tractors, would then take out key weapon systems. Cazov ships were especially vulnerable to this tactic since once their magazines were destroyed they were practically unarmed. However, Cazov ships proved to be more maneuverable and often kept out of range of the capital tractor beams. More important, large Cazov ships had shearing planes, making tractor beams useless. Also, Cazov fighters, armed with anti-matter close attack missiles, more than made up any design deficiencies. The Gander assisted the ASNB in developing anti-matter warheads, though the required breakthroughs, not to mention the funding appropriations, were not made until the fall of the Gander homeworld. Armed pinnaces came about quicker, and a number of FT4 and FT8 pinnace carriers were built in time for the defense of the warp chain leading to Ahlon Prime. Even in war the bureaucratic hiearchy had to be followed, and because of this the nascent strikefighter program was delayed for months. The bureau that ran the AFSC program lobbied to host the program while another group wanted it for its own and have control of the resulting infrastructure. Predictably, the squabbling had to be resolved by the Binding Arbitor Board but by then the Gander homeworld had been conquered. Strikefighter R&D, naturally, was funded heavily to make up time. The delay proved costly, for only 36 fighters - 12 prototype and 24 expensively reversed-engineered F1s - were on hand at Ahlon Prime's spacestation. Destroyed in short order, the fighters were followed by the station itself, taking six incomplete Office Party carriers fitted with hanger bays along into ruin. Under strict Cazov supervision, the Ahlon were allowed to develop gunboats for deployment on their three Committee class battleships. Other than that allowance, the ASNB was kept one technical level below that of the Cazov Navy. No further fighter development was allowed nor were the Ahlon permitted to build them. AFSCs were only allowed on defensive bases. After the Fendalen War the situation of the Ahlon improved. Securing a trade and defense treaty with the Kingdom, the Ahlon recolonized their two pre-war systems. Contact with the Gander had been re-established and relations went as far as a trade treaty. However, attempts to form an independent alliance was foiled by the respective nation's patrons. The Kingdom wanted the Ahlon to serve as a buffer to prevent 'Terpla'n adventurism' while the CPS didn't want to see the Gander fall into the Kingdom's influence. The Bureau of Government (BG) did gain technical assistance in return for its alliance with the Kingdom. For a three-system polity the BG generated a fair amount of coin, and its location near the Kingdom's home sector helped in the reestablishment of defenses and installations ravaged by the CPS in the closing months of the war. The Ahlon Space Navy Bureau (ASNB) gained in strength, utilizing copies of Royal Navy ships to form a self defense task force. With the demonstrated performance of strikefighters the old AFSC faction within the navy was mostly quieted. The carrier became the centerpiece of the ASNB forces. At the start of the Pulurtan War the ASNB developed its own versions of the observed technologies employed by the High Navy. Due to its small resource base the BG deliberately decided to place two-thirds of the self defense task force into mothballs in order to deploy a task group to support the RN. The Ahlon made the decision to fully support their Fendalen allies since there was no way they could withstand any assault the Pulurtans cared to launch at them. Officially labeled Task Group KB5.11 (abbreviated KB-511), the 48 Ahlon warships went on to serve with distinction in the 'central' front of the war. In the post-war period the Ahlon mothballed the majority of their fleet and set upon the decades long task of terraforming the primary planet in one of its two outlying systems. The race remained treaty partners with the Fendalen Kingdom but didn't amalgamate. Quite happy with their bureaucracy, the Ahlon kept to their three-system polity, completely content with their lot in the universe. |

This proved useful since Cazov ships favored x-ray lasers as well as anti-matter warheads as their shipboard armament. Every sixth DN was a Bureau Chief. |

The task group sent to assist the Fendalen instead employed a new class. The Carrier Committees and their variants were used for fleet defense. Before being phased out, the AFSC Board lobbied successfully to have the last 200 AFSC in inventory be used on the ships. Tasked for the anti-gunboat role, the small armed craft did remarkably well. With attrition the numbers were reduced to the point that, apart from three on display on the homeworld, only nine were left for the assault on the Pulurtan homeworld years later. The pilots of those remaining nine AFSCs were all aces, with the top scorer having twelve gunboats, five fighters, three assault shuttles and two pinnace kills to his credit. 12 of these SDAs were part of Task Group KB-511. |
